Essay from the year 2002 in the subject Romance Languages - Spanish Studies, grade: 1,8 (A-), University College Cork (Spanish), course: HS 2057 Cinema & Identity in Spain & Latin America, language: English, abstract: The film version of the novel La Familia de Pascual Duarte by Camilo José Cela is written and directed by Ricardo Franco Rubio and was first screened in 1975. Without any background knowledge the film seems hard to follow, boring and depressing, but by watching it with background knowledge, just as Spanish history, Spanish cinema history, the novel itself or by watching the film for the second time one can realise, that it is a very demanding film full of symbols, of small important details which all have a second meaning, a hidden meaning. Turning a novel into a film is a very complex task, one cannot just take the book and, without changing anything, trying to make a film out of it. There are huge differences between reading a book and watching the same thing on screen: ”the analysis of a literary text reveals the manner in which linguistic and literary tools such as graphemes, syntax, tropes, shadings, and narrative strategies create a story and its characters. The cinematic rendering of that verbal fiction is accomplished by means of cinematic tools such as mise-en-scéne, photography and camera work, editing, sound, narrative strategies, and choice of actors.”1 So there must be some changes, because some details of books that are good to read, are not necessarily good to watch! It is difficult to say, when is a film version of a novel ”good” or ”bad”, because the filmmakers work with other instruments, in a ”good” film version we do not see exactly the same, that we imagined while reading the book. By comparing the novel to the film there are similarities and differences, in the film there are characters and scenes left out but also things added, which do not appear in the book. ”Novel and film share several basic structural elements. 1) Both focus on the text′s central character, Pascual Duarte, an agricultural labourer living with his family in an isolated, unnamed village in Extremadura, Spain. The time frame is principally the first three decades of the twentieth century. 2) Both texts present a case of individual violence that, while enacted within a circumscribed social sphere, resonates with meaning on a national level. 3) Both texts, hindered by the censorship of the Franco years, mask the significance of the social and historical context for criminal behaviour. 4) Both texts actively engage the receptor in the task of providing a motive for the extremely violent behaviour exhibited by the protagonist.”2

"The United States has come to know Spain, its people, and its land through its literature and, more recently, through the international distribution of many of its films. This analysis aims to probe the creative Spanish soul in greater depth through the particular prism of the cinematic adaptation." "The analysis of the Spanish novels La familia de Pascual Duarte and Los santos inocentes and their cinematic adaptations Pascual Duarte (1975) and Los santos inocentes (1984) is based on the intersection of literary and cinematic theory." "The first chapter of this study summarizes various theories whose integration forms a basis for the analysis of the cinematic adaptation. Structuralism, semiotics, deconstruction, reader criticism, and Freudian/Lacanian psychology serve both film and literary criticism in their analysis of texts. The theories examined in this chapter are inflected in later chapters into the criticism and analysis of the novels and films in question." "The second chapter provides general background information on agrarian Spain - the historical, economic, and ideological context of both La familia de Pascual Duarte and Los santos inocentes. While in most cases the texts refer only obliquely to the reigning ideology that is responsible for the plight of the rural worker, the history of the province of Extremadura, where rural poverty is and was a social and economic phenomenon, is crucial to the understanding of all four texts whose stories are set in this province."--BOOK JACKET.Title Summary field provided by Blackwell North America, Inc. In the final moments of the Spanish Civil War, a writer and founding member of Franco's Fascist Party is about to be shot, and yet miraculously escapes into the forest. When his hiding place is discovered, he faces death for the second time that day-but is spared, this time by a lone soldier. The POW becomes a national hero and a member of Franco's first government, while the soldier is forgotten. Sixty years later, Cercas's novel peels back the layers of truth and propaganda in order to discover who the real hero was. Elegantly constructed and told with self-deprecating, melancholy humor, Soldiers of Salamis is a wholly original work of literature by a modern master.

Christ versus Arizona turns on the events in 1881 that surrounded the shootout at the OK Corral, where Wyatt Earp, Doc Holliday, and Virgil and Morgan Earp fought the Clantons and the McLaurys. Set against a backdrop of an Arizona influenced by the Mexican Revolution and the westward expansion of the United States, the story is a bravura performance by the 1989 Nobel Prize-winning author. A monologue by the nave, unreliable, and uneducated Wendell L. Espana, the book weaves together hundreds of characters and a torrent of interconnected anecdotes, some true, some fabricated. Wendell's story is a document of the vast array of ills that welcomed the dawning of the twentieth century, ills that continue to shape our world in the new millennium. "Cela prefers the weird, the apparently meaningless and the amorphous. The world of his novels has been likened to that of Hieronymus Bosch and Brueghel; he sees man as a prisoner in a forbidding universe where chaos and imperfection always defeat the idealist." Paul West "Cela is a restless spirit. In him is united a marked fondness for experiment with a provocative attitude. At the same time he can be included in an old Spanish tradition of hilarious grotesquenesswhich is often the other side of despair. Compassion for mans hopeless suffering is there, but tightly controlled." 1989 Nobel prize for Literature Press Release "One of the most gifted and powerful writers in contemporary Europe."
