LabVIEWTM: A Developer’s Guide to Real World Integration explains how to integrate LabVIEW into real-life applications. Written by experienced LabVIEW developers and engineers, the book describes how LabVIEW has been pivotal in solving real-world challenges. Each chapter is self-contained and demonstrates the power and simplicity of LabVIEW in various applications, from image processing to solar tracking systems. Many of the chapters explore how exciting new technologies can be implemented in LabVIEW to enable novel solutions to new or existing problems. The text also presents novel tricks and tips for integrating LabVIEW with third-party hardware and software. Ideal for LabVIEW users who develop stand-alone applications, this down-to-earth guide shows how LabVIEW provides solutions to a variety of application problems. It includes projects and virtual instrumentation for most of the programs and utilities described. Many of the authors’ own software contributions are available on the accompanying CD-ROM.

This monograph describes the synthesis and use of biologically-inspired artificial hydrocarbon networks (AHNs) for approximation models associated with machine learning and a novel computational algorithm with which to exploit them. The reader is first introduced to various kinds of algorithms designed to deal with approximation problems and then, via some conventional ideas of organic chemistry, to the creation and characterization of artificial organic networks and AHNs in particular. The advantages of using organic networks are discussed with the rules to be followed to adapt the network to its objectives. Graph theory is used as the basis of the necessary formalism. Simulated and experimental examples of the use of fuzzy logic and genetic algorithms with organic neural networks are presented and a number of modeling problems suitable for treatment by AHNs are described: · approximation; · inference; · clustering; · control; · classification; and · audio-signal filtering. The text finishes with a consideration of directions in which AHNs could be implemented and developed in future. A complete LabVIEWTM toolkit, downloadable from the book’s page at enables readers to design and implement organic neural networks of their own. The novel approach to creating networks suitable for machine learning systems demonstrated in Artificial Organic Networks will be of interest to academic researchers and graduate students working in areas associated with computational intelligence, intelligent control, systems approximation and complex networks.

In 1965, UQP first published Ian Fairweather's The Drunken Buddha. His iconic translation of an ancient Chinese novel, illustrated with his paintings, was praised by scholars and readers alike. Fairweather was fascintated by Chinese calligraphy and possessed great knowledge of popular Buddhism; his translation retains the spirit of both the original work and popular Chinese literature in general. This new edition celebrates Fairweather's creative legacy; and the classic tale of Buddhist monk Chi-Tien, often drunk and irreverent but nonetheless considered a saint, continues to resonate.

Computer Vision: Algorithms and Applications explores the variety of techniques commonly used to analyze and interpret images. It also describes challenging real-world applications where vision is being successfully used, both for specialized applications such as medical imaging, and for fun, consumer-level tasks such as image editing and stitching, which students can apply to their own personal photos and videos. More than just a source of “recipes,” this exceptionally authoritative and comprehensive textbook/reference also takes a scientific approach to basic vision problems, formulating physical models of the imaging process before inverting them to produce descriptions of a scene. These problems are also analyzed using statistical models and solved using rigorous engineering techniques. Topics and features: structured to support active curricula and project-oriented courses, with tips in the Introduction for using the book in a variety of customized courses; presents exercises at the end of each chapter with a heavy emphasis on testing algorithms and containing numerous suggestions for small mid-term projects; provides additional material and more detailed mathematical topics in the Appendices, which cover linear algebra, numerical techniques, and Bayesian estimation theory; suggests additional reading at the end of each chapter, including the latest research in each sub-field, in addition to a full Bibliography at the end of the book; supplies supplementary course material for students at the associated website, Suitable for an upper-level undergraduate or graduate-level course in computer science or engineering, this textbook focuses on basic techniques that work under real-world conditions and encourages students to push their creative boundaries. Its design and exposition also make it eminently suitable as a unique reference to the fundamental techniques and current research literature in computer vision.
