Effective leadership is essential for the flourishing of any academic institution. With the challenges of senior-level leadership being more complex today than ever before, it is essential to learn from the wisdom of successful leaders who have gone before. "Thriving in Leadership," edited by Karen A. longman, includes contributions by 17 other senior leaders in Christ-centered colleges and universities across North America. This compilation represents an engaging introduction to leadership approaches and strategies in Christian higher education, designed to strengthen the leaders of today and inspire the leaders of tomorrow. Since 1998, the Council for Christian Colleges & Universities (CCCU) has offered leadership Development Institutes (lDIs) and Women's leadership Development Institutes (WlDIs) every other year with the goal of identifying, equipping, and encouraging the next generation of leadership for Christ-centered higher education. The chapter authors of this compilation are drawn from lDI/WlDI resource leadership Teams over the past dozen years, collectively bringing hundreds of years of leadership experience to the topics being addressed. These authors have served effectively in senior-level leadership positions; they have also experienced God's calling though job transitions, family demands, and other relational responsibilities that have shaped their careers.

Universities and Colleges with a Christian affiliation have in recent years sought to renew and redefine their identities and almost all have rearticulated their mission for the modern age after a long and serious process of reappraisal. This process has been accompanied by an ongoing discussion of the nature and identity of higher education itself. This discussion has required leadership that is different from most secular leadership. This book provides a range of experienced voices, including the Archbishop of Canterbury, that reflect on the character and mission of leadership in Christian higher education in the 21st Century.

This timely look at the state of Christian higher education in America contains descriptive, historical narratives that explore how fourteen Christian colleges and universities are successfully integrating faith and learning on their campuses despite the challenges posed by the increasingly pluralistic nature of modern culture. Written by respected representatives from seven major faith traditions - Roman Catholic, Lutheran, Reformed, Mennonite, Evangelical, Wesleyan/Holiness, and Baptist/Restorationist - these narratives are also preceded by introductory essays that define the worldview and theological heritage of each given tradition and ask what that tradition can contribute to the task of higher education.

ABSTRACT: This paper argues that higher education should exist for society's common good, a focus that has been lost in recent years (Dorn, 2011; Eagan et al., 2015; Ford 2016; Habley, Bloom & Robbins, 2012). To explore how Christian higher education can provide leadership in returning to a focus on the common good, this paper traces the movement of higher education away from the common good and recommends strategies for a counter-movement. A review of the organizational change process is offered, with an emphasis on the connection between organizational citizenship behavior (OCB) and positive leadership strategies for the common good. Fostering positive and productive work environments marked by shared service to society could set Christian higher education apart within the higher education milieu, creating an opportunity for Christian colleges and universities to flourish in times of change.

Kingdom leadership does not begin and end at the church door. Christians are called to conduct leadership in government, commerce, schools, neighborhoods, families, para-church ministries and a myriad other contexts. God has given us many gifts, and our responsibility is to be stewards of those gifts, and use them to do the King s work. In that context, this comprehensive text explores key facets of leadership from a Christian worldview so as to equip people to conduct leadership more authentically than would be possible under alternative paradigms. The book begins with the seldom considered theological foundations of leadership while also tracing the historic roots of management, organization and leadership theories. All of this leads to a robust discussion of five essential challenges and practices--communication, negotiation, decision-making, financial stewardship and personal development. The combined efforts of these experts in the field provide a practical theology of leadership from a Christian worldview for emerging and established leaders. Here is the foundation needed for those who want to conduct leadership in a manner consistent with their faith in both religious and nonreligious organizational contexts.
