Meee-ow! The word "catty" in the dictionary just got a new picture . . . and it's none other than the Queen of Attitude herself, Maude. Maude-for anyone who may have been preoccupied with hairballs and such-is the fabulously popular kitty with her very own line of greeting cards. We're not talking a mouse-sized 10 or 20 slicks here, but a full line of 60-plus cards displaying this furry diva and her bon mots. Life According to Maude captures our feline diva in full "cattitude." Each page shares the world according to Maude and pictures her resplendent in all her well-whiskered glory. Consider towel-wrapped Maude perched in her favorite salon chair saying, "When life gets stressful, nothing soothes the soul like the great indoors." Or Maude sporting her favorite pearl necklace (what self-respecting cat would have just one?), reflecting, "Relationships are a two-way street. My way and the wrong way!" Photographer John Lund captures this catchy cat at her all-time best, and then works with a wacky creative team to craft the unforgettably funny scenes and sayings that go with them. The resulting "catmosphere" makes for one of the freshest and zaniest gift books in years.

Maude watched helplessly as the halpless dough she'd buried the day before, spewed out the every crevice, its sticky finger majestically enveloping everything in its path. Shiny little air bubbles formed then burst proudly in the midday sun. The wood heap had turned into the perfect oven! Maude was speechless, embarrassed, betrayed and angry all at the same time. What could she say? She felt the heat rising in her cheeks, and it had nothing to do with the heat of the day!

During the first decade of the twentieth century the Roman Catholic Church was shaken to its core by an intellectual reform movement, 'modernism', seeking radical changes in the traditional approaches to biblical studies, philosophy and theology. The repercussions of the church authorities' condemnations and repression of the so-called modernist heresy persisted for more than half a century. Then, liberated by Pope John XXIII, himself suspected of being a modernist, the Second Vatican Council created the possibility for many modernist ideas to resurface and initiate a renewal of the church in the modern world. The present work contains the integral correspondence of the leader of this modernist movement, Baron Friedrich von Hugel to Maude D. Petre along with her two extant letters to him. The correspondence offers a unique glimpse into the history of the movement and an example of how its leading protagonist promoted the novel ideas of many of the seminal thinkers of the time among his friends and colleagues. Sadly, the letters also depict the often unchristian nature of the authorities' response and the subsequent suffering inflicted on some of the church's most critical but faithful and enlightened members.

It is 1931 in Fremont County, Kansas, and Deborah Nelson’s husband, Christian, disappeared months ago. But Deborah has no time to feel sorry for herself. Two children need her love, livestock require feeding, and farm crops must be tilled. Deborah is desperately trying to survive in a man’s world—an especially challenging task for a woman believed to be an Indian. Even after a drought begins to cause dire conditions, Deborah refuses to leave, for her soul is still connected with the land. She decides she must sell her cattle and stop planting wheat and then finds herself fighting a field fire that comes close to burning her farmstead and threatens the life of her old friend. Things go from bad to worse when she, her children, and the community experience the first horrifying dirt storm of the drought. Deborah partners with her closest neighbors to share labor and valuable resources, not realizing that very soon, one neighbor will leave her with five more mouths to feed and a promise he may not be able to keep. The Marrow of Life continues the saga of one woman’s determined journey through the hardships of the Depression and Dust Bowl era as she slowly comes to the realization that she must turn to others for help.

This work provides factual accounts of women of the Old West in contrast to their depictions on film and in fiction. The lives of Martha Calamity Jane Canary and Belle The Bandit Queen Starr are first detailed; one discovers that Starr was indeed friends with notorious bank robbers of the time, including Jesse James and Cole Younger, but was herself primarily a cattle and horse thief. Wives and lovers of some of the West's most famous outlaws are covered in the second section along with real-life female entertainers, prostitutes and gamblers. Native Americans, entrepreneurs, doctors, reformers, artists, writers, schoolteachers, and other such respectable women are covered in the third section.

Maude Adams (1872-1953) was a beloved and talented American Broadway actress who greatly influenced succeeding acting methods and production techniques. She first appeared on stage as an infant in her actress mother's arms, and then moved to a succession of children's parts. Her New York debut came in 1888, supported by E. H. Southern and then Charles Frohman, a demanding mentor. In 1905, she played her most famous role: the star of James M. Barrie's Peter Pan. Beautiful, kind, and very private, this early American actress is chronicled in a biography covering both her life experiences and innovations on the stage.
