Madder red is an ancient dyestuff, extracted from the root of the madder plant, growing in many countries around the world. The secret and devilishly complex Oriental dyeing process to obtain the lustrous colour known as Turkey Red was avidly sought by Europeans, from the time before the fall of Ancient Rome. It was finally cracked by the French about 1760, who were able to dye wool, silk and cotton bright red. After the lowlands of the Caspian Caucasus had been subdued by the Russians in the early 1800s, madder was cultivated there and rapidly became the main crop. The quest for Turkey Red went hand in hand with an avalanche of scientific research, which not only improved the yield of dyestuff from the roots but led to its chemical synthesis and in 1870 the collapse of the world-wide madder industry. Many of the nascent dye companies grew into chemical giants of our time. Further regional and cultural background may be found in Chenciner's Daghestan: Tradition and Survival, also published in the Caucasus World series.

Francis I's ties with the Ottoman Empire marked the birth of court-sponsored Orientalism in France. Under Louis XIV, French society was transformed by cross-cultural contacts with the Ottomans, India, Persia, China, Siam and the Americas. The consumption of silk, cotton cloth, spices, coffee, tea, china, gems, flowers and other luxury goods transformed daily life and gave rise to a new discourse about the 'Orient' which in turn shaped ideas about economy and politics, specifically absolutism and the monarchy. An original account of the ancient regime, this book highlights France's use of the exotic and analyzes French discourse about Islam and the 'Orient'.

This unique study bridges the history of the Crusades with the history of Armenian nationalism and Christianity. To the Crusaders, Armenian Christians presented the only reliable allies in Anatolia and Asia Minor, and were pivotal in the founding of the Crusader principalities of Edessa, Antioch, Jerusalem and Tripoli. The Anatolian kingdom of Cilicia was founded by the Roupenian dynasty (mid 10th to late 11th century), and grew under the collective rule of the Hetumian dynasty (late 12th to mid 14th century). After confrontations with Byzantium, the Seljuks and the Mongols, the Second Crusade led to the crowning of the first Cilician king despite opposition from Byzantium. Following the Third Crusade, power shifted in Cilicia to the Lusignans of Cyprus (mid to late 14th century), culminating in the final collapse of the kingdom at the hands of the Egyptian Mamluks.

From historical and aesthetic viewpoints alike, the study of the khaz (or neume) system of notation holds immense significance for Armenian and Byzantine music. Its development aided the Armenian people in their creation of a rich musical culture which, to this day, is largely inaccessible since this medieval notation has still not been fully deciphered. Focusing on such sacred texts as the Sharaknots, Khazgirk, Chashots, Gandzaran and Tagharan (Hymnals, Khaz-Books, Lectionary, Canticles and Chants), this unique study creates an overall picture of the khaz system - while at the same time reassessing the theories of western musicologists.

While dress is but one way of entering into a text, and a small point of entry at that, analysis of dress in Richardson`s novels provides us with insights into the nature of novel writing in eighteenth-century England; into the nature of Richardson`s novelistic project of constructing a legible domestic feminine body whose signification remains stable; and into the paradox that Richardson`s ideal, sensible (as possessed of sensibility) female body is ultimately coded as male. It also calls into question the whole construct of the `domestic woman` and what this construct means in terms of bourgeois ideology: Is the ideal domestic woman merely a man in drag?
