In this sweeping interpretive history of mid-nineteenth-century Chicago, historians John B. Jentz and Richard Schneirov boldly trace the evolution of a modern social order. Combining a mastery of historical and political detail with a sophisticated theoretical frame, Jentz and Schneirov examine the dramatic capitalist transition in Chicago during the critical decades from the 1850s through the 1870s, a period that saw the rise of a permanent wage worker class and the formation of an industrial upper class. Jentz and Schneirov demonstrate how a new political economy, based on wage labor and capital accumulation in manufacturing, superseded an older mercantile economy that relied on speculative trading and artisan production. The city's leading business interests were unable to stabilize their new system without the participation of the new working class, a German and Irish ethnic mix that included radical ideas transplanted from Europe. Jentz and Schneirov examine how debates over slave labor were transformed into debates over free labor as the city's wage-earning working class developed a distinctive culture and politics. The new social movements that arose in this era--labor, socialism, urban populism, businessmen's municipal reform, Protestant revivalism, and women's activism--constituted the substance of a new post-bellum democratic politics that took shape in the 1860s and '70s. When the Depression of 1873 brought increased crime and financial panic, Chicago's new upper class developed municipal reform in an attempt to reassert its leadership. Setting local detail against a national canvas of partisan ideology and the seismic structural shifts of Reconstruction, Chicago in the Age of Capital vividly depicts the upheavals integral to building capitalism.

A witty, psychedelic, and telling novel of the 1960s Richard Fariña evokes the Sixties as precisely, wittily, and poignantly as F. Scott Fitzgerald captured the Jazz Age. The hero, Gnossus Pappadopoulis, weaves his way through the psychedelic landscape, encountering-among other things-mescaline, women, art, gluttony, falsehood, science, prayer, and, occasionally, truth. Many myths assert that Chief Albert Luthuli, former President of the African National Congress (ANC), launched the armed struggle on his return to South Africa after receiving the Nobel Peace Prize. This misinterpretation sparks what is arguably one of the most relevant and controversial historical debates in South Africa. In what is the first substantive biography of Luthuli, Scott Couper challenges a nationalist-inspired perspective and argues that the iconic leader did not countenance the initiation of violence in December 1961. Luthuli's ecclesiastical tradition, Congregationalism, imbedded within him the primacy of democracy, education, sacrificial service, multiracialism and egalitarianism, propelling him to the heights of political leadership. These same attributes rendered Luthuli obsolete as a political leader within an increasingly radicalised, desperate and violent environment. By not supporting the ANC's armed movement, his political career proved to be `bound by faith'. `This impassioned and provocative account locates Luthuli as a man of uncompromising Christian faith and principle who has been woefully---and perhaps wilfully---misinterpreted in ANC historiography. Couper produces a considerable body of fresh evidence to support his view that Luthuli was never persuaded of the moral or strategic imperative to abandon non-violence in favour of the armed struggle.'---Saul Dubow, Professor of History. Following hard on the explosion of British punk, in 1979 Gang of Four produced post-punk's smartest record, Entertainment! For the first time, a band wedded punk's angry energy to funk's propulsive beats-and used that music to put across lyrics that brought a heady mixture of Marxist theory and situationism to exposing the cultural politics of everyday life. But for an American college student from the suburbs-and, one expects, for many, many others, including British youth-Jon King's and Andy Gill's mumbled lyrics were often all but unintelligible. Political rock 'n' roll is always something of an oxymoron: rock audiences by and large don't tune in to be lectured to. But what can it mean that a band that made pop songs as political theory actively resisted making that theory legible? Coming to terms with the impact of Entertainment! requires us to take the mondegreen-the misunderstood lyric-seriously. The old joke has it that the title of R.E.M.'s debut album should have been not Murmur, but Mumble: true, so far as it goes. But that's the title, too, of rock 'n' roll's Greatest Hits compilation-and that strategic inarticulateness itself, which creates such an important role for the listener, has an important politics.

"In our contemporary culture there is a deep and widespread longing for close relationships. The thousands of friendship clubs, matrimonial agencies, and meeting centers all point to the fundamental desire for human warmth. Deep in our psyches lies the need to be loved just as we are. Yet that need is not always fulfilled. Crisis clinics, alcoholism centers, counseling agencies, and divorce courts all indicate how difficult it can be for people to draw close and stay close to others." "In offering this book on intimacy, Elaine Storkey hopes to help readers think about themselves and their relationships in the context of the culture that surrounds us and the changes that press in on us. Whether the spotlight is on friendship, mothers and daughters, colleagues at work, marriage and sexual intimacy, or coping with the past, readers will find help in its beam. This book will not only be an aid to understanding relationships, but it will also give many people the courage to make them better."--BOOK JACKET.Title Summary field provided by Blackwell North America, Inc. These hard-hitting, heart-rending pieces, collected from L.A. Weekly, cover the continent's shadow from Brooklyn to Texas to Hollywood - & across to the shores of the Gulf War. More than comments on the 90's scene, they chronicle a civilization in agony. As media conglomerates & 'correct' academic experts dominate American discourse, Ventura's clear, no b.s. language, his ancient Sicilian passion & his courage to speak out have become crucial to the health of the body politic. "Michael Ventura's essays brilliantly diagnose our fin-de-siecle. These concise, elegant & somehow 'final' testimonies are the work of an uncompromising spirit. I was happy to share the wonder of his discoveries & felt the burden & strangeness of our generations peculiar 'job' as the millennium roars to a close."--Andrei Codrescu.
