Part I Chapter I A wind sprang high in the west, like a wave of unreasonable happiness, and tore eastward across England, trailing with it the frosty scent of forests and the cold intoxication of the sea. In a million holes and corners it refreshed a man like a flagon, and astonished him like a blow. In the inmost chambers of intricate and embowered houses it woke like a domestic explosion, littering the floor with some professor's papers till they seemed as precious as fugitive, or blowing out the candle by which a boy read "Treasure Island" and wrapping him in roaring dark. But everywhere it bore drama into undramatic lives, and carried the trump of crisis across the world. Many a harassed mother in a mean backyard had looked at five dwarfish shirts on the clothes-line as at some small, sick tragedy; it was as if she had hanged her five children. The wind came, and they were full and kicking as if five fat imps had sprung into them; and far down in her oppressed subconscious she half-remembered those coarse comedies of her fathers when the elves still dwelt in the homes of men. Many an unnoticed girl in a dank walled garden had tossed herself into the hammock with the same intolerant gesture with which she might have tossed herself into the Thames; and that wind rent the waving wall of woods and lifted the hammock like a balloon, and showed her shapes of quaint clouds far beyond, and pictures of bright villages far below, as if she rode heaven in a fairy boat. Many a dusty clerk or cleric, plodding a telescopic road of poplars, thought for the hundredth time that they were like the plumes of a hearse; when this invisible energy caught and swung and clashed them round his head like a wreath or salutation of seraphic wings. There was in it something more inspired and authoritative even than the old wind of the proverb; for this was the good wind that blows nobody harm. A warm, funny, and profoundly original novel about a family dealing with disaster, from a rising literary star All it takes is a quarter to change pediatric psychiatrist Dr. Owen Lerner's life. When the coin he's feeding into a parking meter is struck by lightning, Lerner survives, except that now all he wants to do is barbecue. What will happen to his patients, who rely on him to make sense of their world? More important, what will happen to his family? The bolt of lightning that lifts Lerner into the air sends the entire Lerner clan into free fall. Mary Kay Zuravleff depicts family-on-family pain with generosity and devastating humor as she explores how much we are each allowed to change within a family—and without. Man Alive! captures Owen and Toni Lerner and their nearly grown children so vividly you'll be looking over your shoulder to make sure the author hasn't been watching your own family in action. Stalling in life's middle lane? Time for a change of gear... Man Alive is an hilarious novel that perfectly captures the highs and lows of modern family life, from acclaimed author Dave Hill. Perfect for fans of David Nicholls' Us or Graeme Simsion's The Rosie Project. Derek Hawker is getting on a bit but he's a good and successful chap. He has provided for his children, been faithful to his wife and as a visionary manager with the vast Bluelake retail mall he's at the peak of his career. But surely there is more to life than his half-baked, bite-sized chunk? Meanwhile his wife has gone off travelling around the world for a year off being a mother, and their two late-teen children are rebelling against their parent's values. Man Alive is a novel about teen wars, teenage angst and parents who refuse to grow old gracefully. It is warm, witty, insightful, humane and very funny. What readers are saying about Dave Hill's novels: 'Enjoyable, witty and well observed' 'The quality and depth of the characters see this book through with flying colours' 'Narrative drive, gritty realism and sheer laugh-out-loud wit'

If he is to become a man, what sort of man should Thomas Page McBee be? To find out, McBee must confront the suffering he has endured at the hands of men: the abuse he endured as a child from his father, and the violent mugging which almost killed him as an adult. Standing at the brink of the life-changing decision to transition from female to male, McBee seeks to understand these examples of flawed manhood, and reclaim his body on his own terms. Powerful, uplifting and profound, Man Alive is a story about transformation; about freedom, and love, and finding the strength to rebuild ourselves as the people we are meant to be.

You Don’t Have to Settle Over the last four decades, I’ve met one-on-one with thousands of men. Most of them know that Jesus promised “a rich and satisfying life” (John 10:10), but too many are confused about what that looks like. In fact, I’d estimate that 90 percent of Christian men lead lukewarm, stagnant, defeated lives—and they hate it. When men try to put into words what’s holding them back, they invariably describe one or more of these seven symptoms: • “I just feel like I’m in this thing alone.” • “I don’t feel like God cares about me personally—not really.” • “I don’t feel like my life has a purpose. In fact, it seems random.” • “I have destructive behaviors that keep dragging me down.” • “My soul feels dry.” • “My most important relationships are not working.” • “I don’t feel like I’m doing anything that will make a lasting difference.” Do you see yourself in these statements? In my experience, these inner aches and pains correspond to seven primal God-given needs that all men feel deeply. And in Man Alive, I’ll show you something surprising—God’s plan to harness that raw, restless energy you feel, pull you out of mediocrity, and propel you toward the life you were meant to live. I promise you…there is a way. No man should have to settle for half alive. You can become the man God created you to be. You can experience a powerful life transformed by Christ. In this book, I’ll show you how. Patrick Morley, PhD.
