For students ready to advance in their study of metals, Physical Metallurgy, Second Edition uses engaging historical and contemporary examples that relate to the applications of concepts in each chapter. This book combines theoretical concepts, real alloy systems, processing procedures, and examples of real-world applications. The author uses his experience in teaching physical metallurgy at the University of Michigan to convey this topic with greater depth and detail than most introductory materials courses offer. What’s New in the Second Edition: Chapter on crystallographic textures and their influence on microstructure and properties Expanded section on aluminum-lithium alloys Information on copper and nickel Rewritten chapters on other non-ferrous metals and low carbon steels Discussions of compact graphite and austempered ductile iron Expanded discussions of cemented carbide tools Updated table on metal prices Following an introduction to metals, the author covers topics that are common to all metals, including solidification, diffusion, surfaces, solid solutions, intermediate phases, dislocations, annealing, and phase transformations. He also focuses on specific nonferrous alloy systems and their significant metallurgical properties and applications, the treatment of steels (including iron-carbon alloys), hardening, tempering and surface treatment, special steels, low carbon sheet steel, and cast irons. The book also covers powder metallurgy, corrosion, welding, and magnetic alloys. There are appendices on microstructural analysis, stereographic projection, and the Miller-Bravais system for hexagonal crystals. These chapters address ternary phase diagrams, diffusion in multiphase systems, the thermodynamic basis for phase diagrams, stacking faults and hydrogen embrittlement. With ample references and sample problems throughout, this text is a superb tool for any advanced materials science course.

The rapid advances made in the study of the synthesis, structure and function of biological macromolecules in the last fifteen years have enabled scientists concerned with antimicrobial agents to achieve a considerable measure of understanding of how these substances inhibit cell growth and division. The use of antimicrobial agents as highly specific inhibitors has in turn substantially assisted the investigation of complex biochemical processes. The literature in this field is so extensive however, that we considered an attempt should be made to draw together in an introductory book the more significant studies of recent years. This book, which is in fact based on lecture courses given by us to undergraduates at Liverpool and Manchester Universities, is therefore intended as an introduction to the biochemistry of antimicrobial action for advanced students in many disciplines. We hope that it may also be useful to established scientists who are new to this area of research. The book is concerned with a discussion of medically important antimicrobial compounds and also a number of agents that, although having no medical uses, have proved invaluable as research tools in biochemistry. Our aim has been to present the available information in a simple and readable way, emphasizing the established facts rather than more controversial material. Whenever possible, however, we have indicated the gaps in the present knowledge of the subject where further information is required.

This is the new edition of the WHO laboratory manual which incorporates recent developments in procedures and techniques useful to small laboratories in developing countries. It provides a practical guide to the safe and accurate performance of basic laboratory techniques and identifies simple, economical procedures that can yield accurate results with limited resources in hot, humid climates. Issues covered include: the use of a microscope and laboratory balances, centrifugation, measurement and dispensing of liquids, cleaning and sterilisation of equipment, disposal of laboratory waste, dispatch of specimens to reference laboratories and laboratory safety; examining different specimens for helminths, protozoa, bacteria and fungi, and techniques for the preparation, fixation and staining of smears; the examination of urine, cerebrospinal fluid and blood, including techniques based on immunological and serological principles.
