Nineteen-year-old Harold Chasen is obsessed with death. He fakes suicides to shock his self-obsessed mother, drives a hearse, and attends funerals of complete strangers. Seventy-nine-year-old Maude Chardin, on the other hand, adores life. She liberates trees from city sidewalks and transplants them to the forest, paints smiles on the faces of church statues, and "borrows" cars to remind their owners that life is fleeting—here today, gone tomorrow! A chance meeting between the two turns into a madcap, whirlwind romance, and Harold learns that life is worth living, and how to play the banjo. Harold and Maude started as Colin Higgins's master's thesis at UCLA Film School. He was working as a pool boy when Paramount purchased the script. The 1971 film, directed by Hal Ashby, bombed. But then this quirky, dark comedy began being shown on college campuses and at midnight-movie theaters, and it gained a loyal cult following. In 1997 it was selected for inclusion on the National Film Registry at the Library of Congress. This novelization was published shortly after the film's release, but has been out of print for more than 30 years. Even fans who have seen the movie dozens of times will find this companion valuable, as it gives fresh elements to watch for and answers many of the film's unresolved questions. Colin Higgins was a screenwriter, director, and producer of films that included Harold and Maude, Silver Streak, 9 to 5, and The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas. He died in 1988.

Katharine Murray Steele long felt compelled to tell the story of her mother, who took her first teaching position in 1924 in the Southern Appalachian Mountains of North Carolina. Katharine went to Rebel's Creek, photographed the mountains and the little house where Maude stayed. To make this story authentic, she interviewed local historians and studied the ways and times of daily living in the remote rural community. Fact and historical fiction come together in one seamless story. An Appalachian story that blends fact with fiction to bring to life the 1924 experiences of a young school teacher in a remote mountain valley.

The original script was sold to a major Hollywood studio virtually overnight; the screenwriter was working as a pool boy and driver for the producer; the director was considered an "acid freak" by the studio heads; the star was a 74-year old actress who didn't know how to drive a car. The film flopped upon release and later became one of the great cult successes of all time. This is the fascinating, never before told story of the making of Harold and Maude, shot guerrilla-style in the San Francisco Bay Area by a crew of "New Hollywood" filmmakers in the winter of 1971.

Maude is an artist. Bruno looks after her. Or does he sponge off her? Is he her lover or her housekeeper? Is she an artist because he organises her life or does her art defy her fussy inventions? What is he to her? What is she to him? Are they simply insane? Suzanne Jacob's Maude develops two complex characters caught in a kind of prolonged, irresponsible adolescence. This intense novella explores the dynamics of this odd couple, a dynamics that transcends the otherwise pervasive apathy, depression and sense of powerlessness.

In this comprehensive account, you’ll discover how Maude and its formal tool environment can be used in three mutually reinforcing ways: as a declarative programming language, as an executable formal specification language, and as a formal verification system. For readers of Room and The Glass Castle, an astonishing memoir of one woman rising above an unimaginable childhood. Maude Julien's parents were fanatics who believed it was their sacred duty to turn her into the ultimate survivor - raising her in isolation, tyrannizing her childhood and subjecting her to endless drills designed to "eliminate weakness." Maude learned to hold an electric fence for minutes without flinching, and to sit perfectly still in a rat-infested cellar all night long (her mother sewed bells onto her clothes that would give her away if she moved). She endured a life without heat, hot water, adequate food, friendship, or any kind of affectionate treatment. But Maude's parents could not rule her inner life. Befriending the animals on the lonely estate as well as the characters in the novels she read in secret, young Maude nurtured in herself the compassion and love that her parents forbid as weak. And when, after more than a decade, an outsider managed to penetrate her family's paranoid world, Maude seized her opportunity. By turns horrifying and magical, The Only Girl in the World is a story that will grip you from the first page and leave you spellbound, a chilling exploration of psychological control that ends with a glorious escape.

Meee-ow! The word "catty" in the dictionary just got a new picture . . . and it's none other than the Queen of Attitude herself, Maude. Maude-for anyone who may have been preoccupied with hairballs and such-is the fabulously popular kitty with her very own line of greeting cards. We're not talking a mouse-sized 10 or 20 slicks here, but a full line of 60-plus cards displaying this furry diva and her bon mots. Life According to Maude captures our feline diva in full "cattitude." Each page shares the world according to Maude and pictures her resplendent in all her well-whiskered glory. Consider towel-wrapped Maude perched in her favorite salon chair saying, "When life gets stressful, nothing soothes the soul like the great indoors." Or Maude sporting her favorite pearl necklace (what self-respecting cat would have just one?), reflecting, "Relationships are a two-way street. My way and the wrong way!" Photographer John Lund captures this catchy cat at her all-time best, and then works with a wacky creative team to craft the unforgettably funny scenes and sayings that go with them. The resulting "catmosphere" makes for one of the freshest and zaniest gift books in years.
