Matthew Monahan creates striking sculptures that engage with the formal challenges of figuration in drawing and sculpture while addressing political, personal and art histories. His elaborate compositions are created from drawings and fragments of former smaller works made from such disparate materials as floral foam, beeswax, glitter, pins, Styrofoam, glass and drywall that he assembles into freestanding sculptures. Handcrafted characters including warriors, saints, slain heroes and demons appear simultaneously as icons and iconoclasts within the ambiguous narrative to which Monahan's work alludes. Human emotions ranging from jubilation to anguish are depicted in Monahan's characters, each seemingly frozen in time and part of an unidentifiable, ahistorical epoch. Not driven by an interest in creating a perfected or pristine object, the works are as much representations of Monahan's thought process as they are finished sculptures. This publication brings together work from the past 10 years upon the occasion of Monahan's debut solo museum exhibition.

Now this amazing comedian delves deep inside to share the poignant story of his childhood and the people who shaped him into the strong, self-reliant man and ruthlessly funny comedian he is today. A tough but loving teacher, she showered the unwilling boy with life lessons and "Mac-isms" that would later carry him through many hardships and give him strength during his slow rise to stardom. Maybe You Never Cry Again recounts this ascent in hilarious detail, from eight-year-old Bernie's stand-up comedy performance at a church dinner to open mike nights in Chicago, the jobs he juggled to make ends meet and eventually, his success in entertaining huge audiences on stage, in film, and on television. Although everyone is familiar with the concept of time in everyday life and has probably given thought to the question of how time began, recent scientific developments in this field have not been accessible in a simple understandable form. This book is important as it presents to readers current ideas about the role of time in theoretical cosmology. Recent observational discoveries, especially that the expansion rate of the universe is accelerating, have revolutionized the understanding of the energy content of the universe. This development leads to new possibilities for the beginning and end of cosmological time. This book emphasizes the notion of entropy and describes how it is theoretically possible that the universe may end in a finite time or that time can cycle and never end. Provided here is twenty-first century scientific knowledge, written by one of the world's most eminent theoretical physicists, that will better enable the public to discuss further the fascinating idea of time. It is ideally suited also for young people considering a career in scientific research.Contents: Why do Many Other Scientists Believe Time Began at a Big Bang?Smoothness of the UniverseStructure in the UniverseDark Matter and Dark EnergyComposition of the Universe's EnergyPossible Futures of the UniverseAdvantages of Cyclic CosmologySummary of Answers to the Questions: Did Time Begin? Writing has taken over my life.. in a good way. My thoughts continually are geared towards my next song. Sometimes I get a few lines in my head when I am driving and I have to pull over the car and write them down! No matter where I am, I get the urge to write. I could be talking to a neighbor, or be in the middle of mass at church and a word or phrase will pop into my head and whoa! -a new song is born! More than anything I love, love, love, the peace of mind songwriting allows me to have. Most of my lyrics take me 15 to 30 minutes to write. There was a time when I was writing 6-8 lyrics in a day. Sometimes I would sit there and stare at my pencil asking why did you stop? I swear at times the pencil kept moving like I wasnt even thinking of what to write. This is my first edition. I hope to continue with future editions as I am still writing new songs everyday. Someday I hope to put my lyrics to my own music and I recently started taking piano lessons. Hey, we all know life is a learning process; a learning curve, we need to experience the turns with the ride! I wish you all success with this book and look forward to seeing some of you with me when it comes to award times!
