"Musket Ball and Small Shot Identification: A Guide "traces the history of musket balls and small shot, and explores their uses as lethal projectiles and in nonlethal alterations. Sivilich asks and answers a variety of questions to demonstrate how a musket ball found in a military context can help to interpret the site: Was it fired? What did it hit? What type of gun is it associated with? Has it been chewed, and if so, by whom or what? Was it hammered into gaming pieces?"

Numismatic Archaeology of North America is the first book to provide an archaeological overview of the coins and tokens found in a wide range of North American archaeological sites. It begins with a comprehensive and well-illustrated review of the various coins and tokens that circulated in North America with descriptions of the uses for, and human behavior associated with, each type. The book contains practical sections on standardized nomenclature, photographing, cleaning, and curating coins, and discusses the impacts of looting and of working with collectors. This is an important tool for archaeologists working with coins. For numismatists and collectors, it explains the importance of archaeological context for complete analysis.

A great survey of the state of military-sites archaeology in America.--Lynn L. M. Evans, curator of archaeology for Mackinac State Historic Parks Forts and battlefields embody activities and locations where nations have come into conflict and where victory or defeat has determined the shape of modern American society. This book discusses some of the most dynamic archaeological projects that have been conducted at many of the most exciting forts and battlefields throughout the United States. David Starbuck discusses the history of American military conflicts and the techniques used for locating and documenting forts and battlefields. He addresses how archaeologists use modern scientific techniques to discover the remains of forts, battlefields, and other types of military encampments, as well as some of the problems encountered when dealing with human remains found at military sites. Referencing both terrestrial and underwater examples, Starbuck uses case studies from major North American military conflicts to explain how forensic anthropology has helped greatly in assigning identity to some of the forgotten soldiers and how archaeology has helped to protect sites and improve the accuracy of the reconstruction of forts and battlefields. Having directed excavations at several major military sites, and having visited many of the sites detailed in his book, Starbuck is able to provide a personal perspective on what survives of these forts and battlefields today and what they tell us about our past. David R. Starbuck, associate professor of anthropology and sociology at Plymouth State University, is the author of eight books including Massacre at Fort William Henry and Rangers and Redcoats on the Hudson.

Volume III (479 pages) is a comprehensive listing of all known Confederate rifled projectiles and their components. Chapter 10 includes a history of each named pattern, its inventor or origin, reasons for success or failure, pictures, drawings, sabot design, casing configuration, specifications, bursting charges, payloads, variants; and miscellaneous observations and historical observations. It includes all known Confederate shell, segmented shell, case shot, solid shot/bolt, incendiary, rifled canister (Confederate and Union) specimens identified to date, to include many pattern variants. This includes projectiles imported from Britain and used by the Confederacy. It has been expanded to show many patterns of British projectiles that were not used in the Civil War, but have been subsequently imported, so as to assist collectors in making a positive identification. There is a section titled "Miscellaneous and Unidentified Confederate Rifled Projectiles" which includes pictures, drawings and data on rare projectiles that are thought to be of the Civil War era or known to be of foreign origin, but are often confused with Union, Confederate, British or American patterns. Volume III addresses about 750 individual projectiles and several hundred variants of those patterns, including sub-patterns. It provides cross references (by page number) on every specimen, to projectile books published from 1861 to 2003 that contain a similar specimen, picture, data or text, making additional research easier.

The flintlock or firelock musket is one of the most iconic weapons in history: used on the battlefields of the English Civil War, it was then carried by both sides at Blenheim, Bunker Hill, Waterloo and the Alamo, and dominated warfare for more than 150 years, with military service as late as the American Civil War in the 1860s. Featuring specially commissioned full-colour artwork, this engaging study examines the role that the flintlock played in close-order combat on European and other battlefields around the world. Employing first-hand accounts to show how tactical doctrines were successfully developed to overcome the weapon's inherent limitations, Stuart Reid offers a comprehensive analysis of the flintlock's lasting impact as the first truly universal soldier's weapon.
