This book will make you revisit the ‘minority question’ as it has been understood, conventionally. This book subjects to scrutiny some of the well-established social science concepts such as minority, ethnicity, inclusion, exclusion, and self-determination, among others. The purpose of the enquiry is neither to debunk these concepts nor to highlight their relevance/irrelevance, but merely to guard against their unselective usage by scholars. The work is an endeavor to address some of the questions that animate current scholarship on minority and minoritization. In doing so, the book draws upon European and Indian experiences of cultural diversities as these regions are two of the most culturally diverse regions in the world and engage with diversity from within a democratic framework.

In The Land of Weddings and Rain, Gediminas Lankauskas examines the components of the contemporary urban wedding – religious and civil ceremonies, “traditional” imagery and practices, and the conspicuous consumption of domestic and imported goods – in the context of the Western-style modernization of post-socialist Lithuania. Studying the tensions between “tradition” and “modernity” that surround this important ritual event, Lankauskas highlights the ways in which nationalism serves to negotiate the impact of modernity in the aftermath of state socialism’s collapse. His analysis also shows the importance of consumption and commodification to Lithuania’s ongoing “Westernization.” Based on more than a decade of ethnographic research, The Land of Weddings and Rain is a fascinating account of the tensions – between national and transnational, East and West, and old and new – that shape life in post-socialist Eastern Europe.

The articles in this edited volume analyse current conflicts, asymmetries of power and (contested) identities in today's postcolonial Southeast Asia. The special qualifications of Social Anthropology - such as detailed empirical studies and its long tradition of research on ethnicity/identity - are particularly valuable when considering those parts of Southeast Asia, especially peripheral regions and border zones, that are afflicted by violent conflicts. Such hostilities, which in the case of Indonesia reached their peak shortly before and during the years just following the forced resignation of President Suharto in 1998, have been accompanied by an aggressive (re)emergence of ethnic and religious identities. While a number of articles in this volume focus on these recent conflicts, others concentrate on Southeast Asian concepts of power in general. They do not only examine symbolic constructions of domination but also ask how concepts of power are enacted, used and undermined in everyday life, especially within gender relations. The articles dealing with Southeast Asian identity constructions also focus on the topic of power asymmetries. They encounter phenomena of increasingly hardened religious and ethnic identities resulting in rigid social boundaries and conflicts between different groups. Yet they also point to cosmopolitan options and strategies conforming to local conditions.

Kinship is at the heart of European society, sharing with the state responsibility for welfare and social reproduction. But the workings of kinship and their connection to state policies remain controversial. Received theories have had to be revised in the light of social and demographic change and accumulating evidence of long-standing cultural differences. In this volume the authors use network data to measure the extent of mutual assistance between relatives and explore its connection to residence and marriage patterns, intergenerational relations, gender roles and fertility. They go on to review the findings of the whole study û drawing critically on theories of altruism, reciprocity, cultural transmission and socio-economic change. The book closes with some recommendations for policy. --Book Jacket.
