In 2008 Dr. Afrin started coming to understand that a newly recognized type of mast cell disease, now called mast cell activation syndrome (MCAS), was the underlying diagnosis in many patients he was seeing who were each suffering large assortments - quite different from one patient to the next - of chronic multisystem inflammatory illnesses of unclear cause. Dr. Afrin soon gained experience that MCAS is far more prevalent than the only mast cell disease previously known to medicine (the rare disease of mastocytosis) and that most MCAS patients, once accurately diagnosed, can eventually find significantly helpful medications targeted at the disease. The frequency and magnitude of the improvements Dr. Afrin has seen - even the relief that comes from finally having a unifying diagnosis other than "psychosomatism" - have spurred him to focus in this area, not only tending to the needs of his patients but also pursuing research to advance our understanding of the disease and helping to educate other professionals who in turn can help even more of the many people who have long been suffering not only the symptoms of the disease but also the natural concern of not understanding why one would be so "unlucky" to have acquired so many medical problems. As it turns out, such patients are not so unlucky and truly have just one root issue (and a very common one at that), which has the biological capability to develop, directly or indirectly, into most or all of their previously diagnosed problems. There is a great deal yet to learn about this, but even with just the present very limited understanding, the opportunity to diagnose and help patients with MCAS seems to be enormous and Dr. Afrin felt a description of the disease, written for the general public, might help lead some MCAS patients on a journey to diagnosis and improvement sooner rather than later. Dr. Afrin hopes this book will help people who might have, or do have, MCAS. A portion of the proceeds of purchases of this book will go to support research and education in this area.

HIT – Histamine Intolerance – is a condition that affects many people but remains largely undiagnosed. The symptoms of histamine intolerance (HIT) are caused by the inability of the body to break down histamine sufficiently. These symptoms can appear very like an allergy and can cause stomach and intestinal complaints, migraine, tiredness and skin problems, to name but a few. This is in most cases because of the reduced activity or low presence of an enzyme called diamine oxidase (DAO), which is mainly responsible for breaking down histamine and other biogenic amines ingested through food. Foods that are known culprits include: red wine, ready meals, cured meats, mature cheeses, tomatoes and aubergines. It can make people's lives a total misery. But it CAN be brought under control with the RIGHT DIAGNOSIS and the RIGHT DIET. This book is a guide to how to achieve both. It helps both health professionals and patients gain insight. After the great success of the first edition, this second edition contains a new section on the different points of view about diagnosis as well as a second food list - a tolerance index which resulted from a survey of 800 participants who judged 109 foods according to their individual threshold - side by side with the scientifically based food list. CONTENTS Introduction Histamine Intolerance – In a nutshell How do I find out if I have HIT? 40 million Americans (1 in 5) suffer from chronic cramping, bloating, diarrhea, and gas. If you or someone you love is plagued by chronic digestive distress, you know what it's like to be held captive by your gut or spend thousands of dollars on prescriptions that brought only temporary relief. In Trust Your Gut, internist Dr. Gregory Plotnikoff and clinical psychologist Dr. Mark Weisberg show how to listen to your gut to interpret symptoms as important messages that can help correct imbalances. Rather than using drugs to mask the symptoms and underlying problems, Plotnikoff and Weisberg offer a program to assess how diet, sleep, and stress are affecting your life and health. Plotnikoff and Weisberg offer a self-help program that provides anyone with chronic gut distress the tools to break the vicious cycle of symptoms, fear and pain.

This book represents a new and hopeful paradigm for treatment of diseases that are spreading globally as countries adopt Western lifestyles and standards of living. It describes the phenomenal science and clinical efficacy of the work of Dr Xiu-Min Li across a broad array of immune and inflammatory diseases. These include food allergies, asthma, eczema, "new" diseases such as mast cell disorders, obesity, and mental health problems that are part of a worldwide "epidemic of progress". The most allergic people are caught in a cycle of medication, steroid dependency, emergency hospitalization, and curtailing their activities and diets to avoid triggers. Children are "losing their childhoods." They are fighting a battle against diet, climate change, and environmental degradation. Dr Li offers them hope by healing the entire immune system, not just address symptoms. In her practice Dr Li treats complex combinations of allergic diseases for all ages, from infancy through adulthood, bringing relief to people who have suffered terribly from oozing, bleeding skin, desperate breathing disorders, and life-threatening food allergies. She uses her vast knowledge of biochemistry to improve on the traditional decoctions to create refined versions suitable for modern tastes and lifestyles. In contrast with Western pharmaceuticals, which are the study of "one molecule's effects on one other molecule" Dr Li's work shows the effects of multiple molecules on multiple other molecules. Increasing numbers of scientists are beginning to see the possibilities for their own research, with the prospects for more collaborations with prestigious institutions around the world. http://allergyblogawardsuk.co.uk/5-managing-asthma-allergies-with-henry-erlich/ Contents: About the AuthorsAcknowledgmentsNotes on the TextForeword (Dr Renata J M Engler)Introduction (Dr Xiu-Min Li)Food Allergy UpdateAsthmaAtopic DermatitisInflammatory Bowel DiseaseMast Cell Activation SyndromeObesityFuture Research (Dr Xiu-Min Li)Appendix: Information about Dr Li's PracticeIndex Readership: Allergists, Immunologists, Pulmonigists; Dermatology, Food Allergy Parents, Asthma Parnts, parents of very eczemataous children, TCM childern practitioners and students, National Eczema Association; American Lung Association, Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America.

Resident mast cells are uniquely positioned in multiple organ systems at either the tissue and/or external environment or located near nerve endings and/or blood vessels. These locations allow the mast cell to serve as a sentinel and thus play a critical role in not only inflammatory situations to promote recruitment and infiltration of other immune cells, but also homeostatic maintenance. Although mast cells have several conserved characteristics, the authors provide evidence that the micro-environment influenced differences in the phenotype of tissue-specific mast cells, control the various responses to injury, inflammation and remodelling. This book brings together the work from experts across multiple tissue/organ systems and inflammatory causes (viral, bacterial, and auto-immune) to present the most up to date knowledge regarding the role of mast cells in these regulatory and disease events.
