"From the #1 New York Times bestselling author of the Sookie Stackhouse novels--"the Mark Twain of things that live under your bed"*--comes a new novel of Midnight, Texas, the town where some secrets will never see the light of day... At Midnight's local pawnshop, weapons are flying off the shelves--only to be used in sudden and dramatic suicides right at the main crossroads in town. Who better to figure out why blood is being spilled than the vampire Lemuel, who, while translating mysterious texts, discovers what makes Midnight the town it is. There's a reason why witches and werewolves, killers and psychics, have been drawn to this place. And now they must come together to stop the bloodshed in the heart of Midnight. For if all hell breaks loose--which just might happen--it will put the secretive town on the map, where no one wants it to be..."--

In The Night Shift, Dr. Brian Goldman shares his experiences in the witching hours at Mount Sinai Hospital in downtown Toronto. We meet the kinds of patients who walk into an E.R. after midnight: late-night revellers injured on their way home after last call, teens assaulted in the streets by other teens and a woman who punches another woman out of jealousy over a man. But Goldman also reveals the emotional, heartbreaking side of everyday E.R. visits: adult children forced to make life and death decisions about critically ill parents, victims of sexual assault, and mentally ill and homeless patients looking for understanding and a quick fix in the twenty-four-hour waiting room. Written with Goldman’s trademark honesty and with surprising humour, The Night Shift is also a frank look at many issues facing the medical profession today, and it offers a highly compelling inside view into an often shrouded world.

Originally published in 1942 to rave reviews and astonishing commercial success, Night Shift dramatizes the working class life of the Midwest during World War II with the excitement of melodrama, the vividness of documentary, and the page-turning quality of the best commercial fiction. Sally Otis works herself to the bone as a waitress, supporting her three children and a jobless younger sister. With her bills mounting and no rest in sight, Sally's resolve is beginning to crumble when her swaggering older sister, Petey Braun, appears on the scene. Petey, with her furs and jewels and exotic trips, is an American career woman—one who makes a career of men. But when Petey gets a gig at the glamorous, rowdy local nightclub, it will forever alter the world of the struggling Otis family. Night Shift “manages to be touching and horrible, sentimental and brutal all at the same time. It is both sordidly real and theatrically melodramatic. It’s good” (New York Times).

“Scottish author and illustrator Debi Gliori's small but mighty picture book, Night Shift, is an eye-opening look at depression.”—BookPage "A poignant, empathetic and ultimately hopeful book."—School Library Journal "By giving depression physical dimension, Gliori diffuses some of its strange, persistent power.“—Publishers Weekly "Debi Gliori has given us all a powerful, and beautiful, gift with Night Shift."—Jay Asher, author of Thirteen Reasons Why and Piper, his first graphic novel, which he coauthored "It's a masterpiece.”—David Walliams, bestselling children's author From beloved author and illustrator Debi Gliori (No Matter What) comes Night Shift, a groundbreaking lushly illustrated picture book based on Gliori's own personal history with depression. Fighting dragons is one way of fighting depression. This book is another. Through stunning black and white illustration and deceptively simple text, author and illustrator Debi Gliori provides a fascinating and absorbing portrait of depression and hope in Night Shift, a moving picture book about a young girl haunted by dragons. The young girl battles the dragons using 'night skills': skills that give her both the ability to survive inside her own darkness and the knowledge that nothing—not even long, dark nights filled with monsters—will last forever. Drawn from Gliori's own experiences and struggles with depression, the book concludes with a moving author's note explaining how depression has affected her and how she continues to cope. Gliori hopes that by sharing her own experience she can help others who suffer from depression, and to find that subtle shift that will show the way out. A brave and powerful book, give Night Shift to dragon fighters young and old, and any reader who needs to know they're not alone.

New York is the city that never sleeps. This luminous book peels back the cover of darkness over the city as it hums along in the night, revealing a hidden world populated by the thousands of women and men who work and live the nightshift. Written with beauty and grace, Nightshift NYC weaves together cultural critique, vivid reportage, and arresting photographs to trace the inverted logic of the city at night. Russell Leigh Sharman and Cheryl Harris Sharman spent a year interviewing and shadowing fry cooks and coffee jockeys, train conductors, cab hacks, and dozens of others who keep the city running when the sun goes down. Investigating familiar places such diners and delis, they explore some less familiar ones as well—taking us on a walking tour of homelessness in Manhattan, onto a fishing boat out of Brooklyn, and into other little-known corners of the night. Traveling past the threshold of voyeurism into the lives of real people, they depict a social space entirely apart—one that is highly structured and inherently subversive. Together, these stories open a compelling view on contemporary urban life and, along the way, reveal the soul of the city itself.

The sprawling, Fortune 500 paper mill in which I worked was one of America's prototypical factories. Located in Southern California, it was big (44 acres under roof), busy (three shifts around the clock, 360 days a year), crowded (more than 700 hourly and 300 salaried employees), and self-assertive (represented by a democratic labor union). I eventually became president of that union. The 270 anecdotes contained in this volume span a period of almost 30 years. Because I chose not to confine or categorize them, they are not presented chronologically. Thus, there will be some arbitrary randomness and skipping around. But for anyone interested in what the human face of American manufacturing looked like during the twilight of its glory years, this book represents one honest, impressionistic glimpse.
