Neil Simon Full Length, Comedy Characters: 1 male, 3 female Interior Set Middle-aged and married, overworked and overweight, Barney Cashman wants to join the sexual revolution before it's too late and arranges three seductions: the first, Elaine Navazio proves to be a foul-mouthed bundle of neuroses; Bobbi Michele is next, a 20-ish actress who's too kooky by half; finally comes September and Jeanette Fisher, a gloomy, depressed housewife who happens to be married to Barney's best friend.Mr. Simon has created a great character here...it is extraordinarily funny and yet also charming...as witty as ever, perhaps wittier.-The New York Times Delightfully hilarious and witty, as well as filled with wisdom about human nature...an uproariously funny author. But he is far more than that. He has a mellow and compassionate understanding of how weak and essentially well meaning mankind behaves...a genuinely brilliant play.-New York Post

No Sex Please, We're Brutish is a study on British culture through the eyes of a Greek student who spent five years living and studying in Britain. It is largely based on personal experiences, which are presented in a satirical, and often, caustic manner. In that respect, it could also be described as an approach to the cultural anthropology—or pathology—of the British people. Its points are further illustrated by using excerpts from newspapers, magazines, student prospectuses, books and a variety of other unlikely sources. Thus, it retains the formality of an academic thesis in the vein of social anthropology and field research, with the obvious necessity of substantiating facts, alongside a humorous and creative presentation. I remember the very day, sometime during the first two weeks of my five-year amorous sojourn in Brutland, when I was made privy to one of the most arcane of their utterings. The time was ripe for that major epiphany, my initiation into the sacred knowledge—or should I say the gnosis?—of that all-important, quintessentially Brutish slang term, the word that endless hours of scholastic education by renowned mentors, plus years of scrupulous scrutiny into scrofulous texts, had disappointingly failed to impart to me, leaving me with that deep sense of emptiness begotten by hemimathy; the time was finally ripe for me to be transported by the velvety feel of the unvoiced palato-alveolar fricative, the élan of the unpronounceable and masochistically hedonistic front open-rounded vowel, and, last but not least, the (admittedly short) ejaculatory quality of the voiced velar stop: all three of them combined together to form that miraculous lexical item, the word shag. —From the book You can read more about the book on its website: www.sex-british.com

British films of the 1970s offers highly detailed and insightful critical analysis of a range of individual films of the period. This analysis draws upon an innovative range of critical methodologies which place the film texts within a rich variety of historical contexts. The book sets out to examine British films of the 1970s in order to get a clearer understanding of two things - the fragmentary state of the filmmaking culture of the period, and the fragmentary nature of the nation that these films represent. It argues that there is no singular narrative to be drawn about British filmmaking in the 1970s, other than the fact that these films offer evidence of a Britain (and ideas of Britishness) characterised by vicissitudes. While this was a period of struggle and instability, it was also a period of openings, of experiment, and of new ideas. Newland looks at many films, including Carry On Girls, O Lucky Man!, That'll be the Day, The Shout, and The Long Good Friday.

Are you afraid you might succumb to bird flu? Worried that a life of poverty awaits you in old age? Concerned that you might not be having as much sex as the French? Anxious that our planet is under threat from climate change or a collision with an asteroid? If any, or all, of these things worry you, you're not alone. Anxiety is a part of modern life. But why? We're living longer, safer, and healthier lives than at any time in human history. So what is there to worry about? In this witty and revealing book, Simon Briscoe and Hugh Aldersey-Williams strip away the hysteria that surrounds over forty of today's most common scare stories, from overpopulation and murder rates to fish shortages and obesity levels, and show the extraordinary extent to which statistics are manipulated or misrepresented by vested interests and the media, eager to exploit our fears. And most importantly they offer a toolkit for skepticism—ways of helping readers sort out what really is worth panicking about from the stuff that really isn't.

In each of these ten longer short stories Geoffrey Crees imparts a Christian message with warmth and whimsical humour. An escape from prison, a lost sock, a hopeless drama group, a stranded cruise ship, to name a few of the stories, provide entertaining situations in which characters are challenged in some way by people of resolute Christian faith. The characters are fictitious, but for the quirky and curious situations in which they find themselves the author has drawn on his experiences over many years as an Anglican vicar. Now retired, Geoffrey lives with his wife in the Forest of Dean in Gloucestershire.
