"Fascinating, shrewd . . . The book deftly traces the rhythms and patterns of Chinese history." —Michiko Kakutani, The New York Times In this sweeping and insightful history, Henry Kissinger turns for the first time at book length to a country he has known intimately for decades and whose modern relations with the West he helped shape. On China illuminates the inner workings of Chinese diplomacy during such pivotal events as the initial encounters between China and tight line modern European powers, the formation and breakdown of the Sino-Soviet alliance, the Korean War, and Richard Nixon’s historic trip to Beijing. With a new final chapter on the emerging superpower’s twenty-first-century role in global politics and economics, On China provides historical perspective on Chinese foreign affairs from one of the premier statesmen of our time.

Fourteen research papers on traditional China. They form three groups, each mixing discursive pieces with more technical research: books and publishing; medieval narrative and culture; vernacular culture. Fundamentally these studies develop a more open way of reading China's traditional narrative literature.

This handbook highlights the important commitments that China has made to the international community and analyzes the potential impact of such commitments on China. Part I of the book outlines China's commitments to convert her economy from a centrally planned one to a free market one as far as cross-border movement of goods, services and personnel is concerned. It reproduces China's commitments in a tabular format to facilitate reading, and is supplemented with brief references to WTO regulations where appropriate so that readers get to know how China's commitments relate to WTO obligations. Part II examines the impacts of China's WTO membership as a whole and on her specific economic sectors. Part III consists of tables and figures selected from a report compiled by the US General Accounting Office, presenting some of the Office's analysis and findings of China's commitments on WTO accession. Appendix 1 lists all the legal instruments pertaining to China's accession to the WTO.

"All of these forty-one foreign officials have profound understanding and research on China. This book contains the interviews with these officials. All of their talks, imbued with their ponderings, can be understood from the global and historical perspectives. The topics involved in these interviews cover international financial crisis, human rights, livelihood issues, environment, cultural spread, and China's pattern and road. Their answers finally resolve this book's core question-how we should look upon the ninety years' history and stragies of the Chinese Communist Party, the world's largest party in power"--Jacket.
