We have built a world that no longer fits our bodies. Our genes - selected through our evolution - and the many processes by which our development is tuned within the womb, limit our capacity to adapt to the modern urban lifestyle. There is a mismatch. We are seeing the impact of this mismatch in the explosion of diabetes, heart disease and obesity. But it also has consequences in earlier puberty and old age.Bringing together the latest scientific research in evolutionary biology, development, medicine, anthropology and ecology, Peter Gluckman and Mark Hanson, both leading medical scientists, argue that many of our problems as modern-day humans can be understood in terms of this fundamental and growing mismatch. It is an insight that we ignore at our peril.

Even today our world is still a great mystery. Many scientists think that we are nearing the end of possible discoveries and believe they have solved the world's puzzles with their purely materialistic theories. However, closer examination shows that the "proof" they present is not always entirely conclusive. The author, is himself a doctor and, due to his own very diverse experiences over many years has remained critical of all dogma, especially scientific ones; he portrays in three volumes an alternative view of our world, which takes, of course, all really confirmed knowledge into account. Volume 1 deals with the basic principles of our universe, Volume 2 with "Life" and Volume 3 with "Death."In an exciting and fascinating manner, yet being still easy to read, a large number of scientific, philosophical and religious ideas are broached. His "Better History of Our World" leads to a comprehensive synthesis of all those sciences which deal with theories of knowledge.

Written by the most prominent of the new generation of historians, this superb volume offers the most up-to-date and authoritative account available of African-American history, ranging from the first Africans brought as slaves into the Americas, to today's black filmmakers and politicians. Here is a panoramic view of African American life, rich in gripping first-person accounts and short character sketches that invite readers to relive history as African Americans experienced it. We begin in Africa, with the growth of the slave trade, and follow the forced migration of what is estimated to be between ten and twenty million people, witnessing the terrible human cost of slavery in the colonies of England and Spain. We read of the Haitian Revolution, which ended victoriously in 1804 with the birth of the first independent black nation in the New World, and of slave rebellions and resistance in the United States in the years leading up to the Civil War. There are vivid accounts of the Civil War and Reconstruction years, the backlash of notorious "Jim Crow" laws and mob lynchings, and the founding of key black educational institutions. The contributors also trace the migration of blacks to the major cities, the birth of the Harlem Renaissance, the hardships of the Great Depression and the service of African Americans in World War II, the struggle for Civil Rights in the 1950s and '60s, and the emergence of today's black middle class. From Harriet Tubman and Frederick Douglass to Martin Luther King, Jr., and Louis Farrakhan, To Make Our World Anew is an unforgettable portrait of a people.

In October 1993, Kim was sitting within a state of meditation when a vision of Mother Mary appeared before her. Over the course of the following twenty-four years Mother Mary was to appear before Kim many times to impart many incredible words of wisdom. While many of Mother Marys teachings took place, Kim relocated to live out within the vast isolation of the Central Australian desert where she kept a mental diary of all of Mother Marys lessons. Kim has now been asked to share those lessons with the rest of the world. I Am - You Are a Soul on a Soul Journey is Kims second journal in a six-part series of teaching journals that will not only help humanity to create peace upon Earth, they will also describe why humanity has never been able to exist within peace. A number of predictions have also been forecast within each one of the journals. These predictions are set to change the course of our human history forever. The six teaching journals that Kim is to present will offer true hope and inspiration to anyone who is on a spiritual path and who is a true warrior in their desire to create world peace. Mother Marys unique wisdom and spiritual insight will be the miracle dose of medicine that the world around us needs right now. Many of the philosophies that are presented throughout this journal, have never been spoken of before.

Geographic data models are digital frameworks that describe the location and characteristics of things in the world around us. With a geographic information system, we can use these models as lenses to see, interpret, and analyze the infinite complexity of our natural and man-made environments. With the geodatabase, a new geographic data model introduced with ArcInfo 8, you can extend significantly the level of detail and range of accuracy with which you can model geographic reality in a database environment.

The Christian doctrine of heaven has been a moral source of enormous power in western culture. It has provided a striking account of the ultimate good in life and has for two millennia animated the hope that our lives can be fully meaningful. Recently, however, the doctrine of heaven has lost much of its grip on the western imagination and has become a vague and largely ignored part of the Christian creed. Not only have our hopes been redefined as a result, but our very identity as human beings has been altered. In this book, Jerry L. Walls argues that the doctrine of heaven is ripe for serious reconsideration. He contends not only that the orthodox view of heaven can be defended from objections commonly raised against it, but also that heaven is a powerful resource for addressing persistent philosophical problems, not the least of which concern the ground of morality and the meaning of life. Walls shows how heaven is integrally related to central Christian doctrines, particularly those concerning salvation, and tackles the difficult problem of why faith in Christ is necessary to save us from our sins. In addition, heaven is shown to illumine thorny problems of personal identity and to be an essential component of a satisfactory theodicy. Walls goes on to examine data from near-death experiences from the standpoint of some important recent work in epistemology and argues that they offer positive evidence for heaven. He concludes that we profoundly need to recover the hope of heaven in order to recover our very humanity.
