This volume contains the proceedings of the Third International Conference on Algebraic and Logic Programming, held in Pisa, Italy, September 2-4, 1992. Like the two previous conferences in Germany in 1988 and France in 1990, the third conference aims at strengthening the connections betweenalgebraic techniques and logic programming. On the one hand, logic programming has been very successful during the last decades and more and more systems compete in enhancing its expressive power. On the other hand, concepts like functions, equality theory, and modularity are particularly well handled in an algebraic framework. Common foundations of both approaches have recently been developed, and this conference is a forum for people from both areas to exchange ideas, results, and experiences. The book covers the following topics: semantics ofalgebraic and logic programming; integration of functional and logic programming; term rewriting, narrowing, and resolution; constraintlogic programming and theorem proving; concurrent features in algebraic and logic programming languages; and implementation issues.

Reasons Why first argues that what philosophers are really after, or at least should be after, when they seek a theory of explanation, is a theory of answers to why-questions. It then advances a thesis about what form a theory of answers to why-questions should take: a theory of answers to why-questions should say what it takes for one fact to be a reason why another fact obtains. The book's main thesis, then, is a theory of reasons why. Every reason why some event happened is either a cause, or a ground, of that event. Challenging this thesis are many examples philosophers have thought they have found of "non-causal explanations." Reasons Why uses two ideas to show that these examples are not counterexamples to the theory it defends. First is the idea that not every part of a good response to a why-question is part of an answer to that why-question. Second is the idea that not every reason why something is a reason why an event happened is itself a reason why that event happened. In the book's final chapter its theory of reasons why is extended to cover teleological answers to why-questions, and answers to why-questions that give an agent's reason for acting.

This book constitutes the thoroughly refereed post-workshop proceedings of the Third International Conference on Flexible Query Answering Systems, FQAS'98, held in Roskilde, Denmark, in May 1998. The 32 revised papers presented were carefully reviewed and went through two rounds of selection for inclusion in the proceedings. This book is the first one focused on flexible query answering systems; this emerging area of research and development builts on results from mathematical logic, fuzzy logic, various database paradigms, information retrieval, linguistics, and human computer-interaction. The papers deal with issues occuring in querying databases and the Internet.

happens, how it happens, and why it happens. Our assumption ought to be that this is as true in education as it is in atomic physics. But this leaves many other questions to answer. The crucial ones: What kind of science is proper or appropriate to education? How does it differ from physics? What is wrong with the prevai1~ ing, virtually unopposed research tradition in education? What could or should be done to replace it with a more adequate tradi tion? What concepts are necessary to describe and explain what we find there? It is in this realm that we find ourselves. Where to start? One place - our place, needless to say - is with one limited but central concept in education, teaching. A long philosophical tradition concerned with the nature of teaching goes back (along with everything else) to Plato, divulging most recent ly in the work of such philosophers as B. O. Smith, Scheffler, Hirst, Komisar, Green, McClellan, Soltis, Kerr, Fenstermacher, et al. An empirical tradition runs parallelto the philosophers -it has its most notable modern proponents in Gage, the Soars, Berliner, Rosen shine, but its roots can be traced to the Sophists. These two tradi tions have been at loggerheads over the centuries.

How should we live? According to philosopher and biologist Massimo Pigliucci, the greatest guidance to this essential question lies in combining the wisdom of 24 centuries of philosophy with the latest research from 21st century science. In Answers for Aristotle, Pigliucci argues that the combination of science and philosophy first pioneered by Aristotle offers us the best possible tool for understanding the world and ourselves. As Aristotle knew, each mode of thought has the power to clarify the other: science provides facts, and philosophy helps us reflect on the values with which to assess them. But over the centuries, the two have become uncoupled, leaving us with questions--about morality, love, friendship, justice, and politics--that neither field could fully answer on its own. Pigliucci argues that only by rejoining each other can modern science and philosophy reach their full potential, while we harness them to help us reach ours. Pigliucci discusses such essential issues as how to tell right from wrong, the nature of love and friendship, and whether we can really ever know ourselves--all in service of helping us find our path to the best possible life. Combining the two most powerful intellectual traditions in history, Answers for Aristotle is a remarkable guide to discovering what really matters and why.
