Most people have to communicate with colleagues every day and persuade them to understand their opinions or to accept their views. This handbook is intended for anyone who is interested in such goal-oriented language. It extracts 300 persuasive tactics from research findings in communication, linguistics, pragmatics and related fields, and presents them in a clear, concise and consistent manner. Such tactics as analogy, argument presentation, humour and metaphor are included. Each tactic is presented on a separate page with an analysis of its persuasive value. Two indexes - one by persuasive need and the other by tactic - allow readers full flexibility to use the handbook in their own way. This work should be of interest in courses which deal with the management of interaction, pragmatics, discourse analysis and communications.

Using techniques from NLP, conversational hypnosis and mentalism, this book has been written to provide a guide to help make people more influential. Most people believe that they are born a certain way. That they are either persuasive or not. However persuasion, like all skills takes learning and practice. We've taken persuasion apart at the seams and taught you very specific ways in which to use your language in order to persuade people. Everyone on this earth is different, yet they give away the blueprint of their brain through various unconscious cues. We teach you how to look for these cues and tailor your new persuasive skills to individual people.

This is the first scholarly book to fully address the topics of the psychology of deceptive persuasion in the marketplace and consumer self-protection. Deception permeates the American marketplace. Deceptive marketing harms consumers’ health, welfare and financial resources, reduces people’s privacy and self-esteem, and ultimately undermines trust in society. Individual consumers must try to protect themselves from marketers’ misleading communications by acquiring personal marketplace deception-protection skills that go beyond reliance on legal or regulatory protections. Understanding the psychology of deceptive persuasion and consumer self-protection should be a central goal for future consumer behavior research. The authors explore these questions. What makes persuasive communications misleading and deceptive? How do marketing managers decide to prevent or practice deception in planning their campaigns? What skills must consumers acquire to effectively cope with marketers’ deception tactics? What does research tell us about how people detect, neutralize and resist misleading persuasion attempts? What does research suggest about how to teach marketplace deception protection skills to adolescents and adults? Chapters cover theoretical perspectives on deceptive persuasion; different types of deception tactics; how deception-minded marketers think; prior research on how people cope with deceptiveness; the nature of marketplace deception protection skills; how people develop deception protection skills in adolescence and adulthood; prior research on teaching consumers marketplace deception protection skills; and societal issues such as regulatory frontiers, societal trust, and consumer education practices. This unique book is intended for scholars and researchers. It should be essential reading for upper level and graduate courses in consumer behavior, social psychology, communication, and marketing. Marketing practitioners and marketplace regulators will find it stimulating and authoritative, as will social scientists and educators who are concerned with consumer welfare.

The presence of service contracts in the durable goods market is increasing even as express manufacturer warranties are becoming longer and more comprehensive. Because service contracts are quite profitable to sellers, durable goods buyers often undergo a relatively high amount of sales pressure to purchase these contracts. Unfortunately, these buyers typically have inaccurate estimates of product breakdown rates--a key factor in the service contract purchase decision. The present research investigates how the persuasion tactics used by retail salespeople in their attempts to sell service contracts interact with perceived breakdown rates to influence purchase decision outcomes. A second study investigates the timing of the service contract sales pitch and its impact on tactic effectiveness for two types of sales tactics. In addition to developing a more complete understanding of the sales process for the service contract market, the findings provide insight into related issues involving general sales interactions and risk management strategies--issues of importance to both academic and managerial researchers.
