The ancient Greek philosopher Plato was born around 425 BC to an aristocratic family. He was the most famous student of Socrates and would eventually go on to form his own school, the Academy. Plato's dialogues are among the most popular of all writings from classical antiquity. Plato wrote his dialogues to record the wisdom that Socrates had imparted to his students. Plato's works "Euthyphro," "Apology," "Crito," "Meno," and "Phaedo" are featured in this collection. These dialogues feature Socrates speaking with a student or friend about the philosophical concerns of laws, the virtue of mankind, the purpose of the gods, and death. Each dialogue searches through different facets of philosophy and makes the reader question their own personal beliefs and morals. While there is no underlying storyline, the dialogues follow important moments in Socrates' life, from his trial to his death. Socrates was charged by the government for not believing in the Greek gods and was eventually put to death by having to drink poison. Plato's works strove to record and safeguard his teacher's wisdom for future generations to discover. This edition is printed on premium acid-free paper and follows the highly regarded translations of Benjamin Jowett.

A Plato Reader offers eight of Plato's best-known works¿Euthyphro, Apology, Crito, Meno, Phaedo, Symposium, Phaedrus, and Republic¿unabridged, expertly introduced and annotated, and in widely admired translations by C. D. C. Reeve, G. M. A. Grube, Alexander Nehamas, and Paul Woodruff. The collection features Socrates as its central character and a model of the examined life. Its range allows us to see him in action in very different settings and philosophical modes: from the elenctic Socrates of the Meno and the dialogues concerning his trial and death, to the erotic Socrates of the Symposium and Phaedrus, to the dialectician of the Republic. Of Reeve's translation of this final masterpiece, Lloyd P. Gerson writes, "Taking full advantage of S. R. Slings' new Greek text of the Republic, Reeve has given us a translation both accurate and limpid. Loving attention to detail and deep familiarity with Plato's thought are evident on every page. Reeve¿s brilliant decision to cast the dialogue into direct speech produces a compelling impression of immediacy unmatched by other English translations currently available."

Among the strengths of this edition are reliable, accessible translations, useful editorial materials, and a straightforward presentation of the Objections and Replies, including the Objections from Caterus, Arnauld, and Hobbes, and Descartes' Replies, in their entirety. 'The Letter Serving as a Reply to Gassendi' -- in which several of Descartes' associates present Gassendi's best arguments and Descartes' replies -- conveys the highlights and important issues of their notoriously extended exchange. Roger Ariew's illuminating general Introduction discusses the Meditations and the intellectual environment surrounding its reception. Also included are a bibliography and chronology.

This compact collection of philosophical texts from the Summa Theologica -- on God, creation, the soul, human acts, moral good and evil, love, habits, virtue, and law -- is presented newly translated in abridged form and cast in a modified version of the medieval quaestio. Included are only the most important objections and Aquinas' replies; appeals to scriptural, theological, and philosophical authorities have been omitted. Unlike the ordering of the originals, questions and answers are here presented prior to objections and replies; the result is a sharp, rich, topically organised question-answer presentation of Aquinas' major philosophical arguments within a brief compass. A general Introduction, head notes, a glossary, an index, and a select bibliography offer expert guidance to the work of this major philosopher.
