While the PSE community continues its focus on understanding, synthesizing, modeling, designing, simulating, analyzing, diagnosing, operating, controlling, managing, and optimizing a host of chemical and related industries using the systems approach, the boundaries of PSE research have expanded considerably over the years. While early PSE research was largely concerned with individual units and plants, the current research spans wide ranges of scales in size (molecules to processing units to plants to global multinational enterprises to global supply chain networks; biological cells to ecological webs) and time (instantaneous molecular interactions to months of plant operation to years of strategic planning). The changes and challenges brought about by increasing globalization and the the common global issues of energy, sustainability, and environment provide the motivation for the theme of PSE2012: Process Systems Engineering and Decision Support for the Flat World. Each theme includes an invited chapter based on the plenary presentation by an eminent academic or industrial researcher Reports on the state-of-the-art advances in the various fields of process systems engineering Addresses common global problems and the research being done to solve them

The environmental impact of industrial waste is one of the most serious challenges facing the chemical process industries. From a focus on end-of-pipe treatment in the 1970s, chemical manufacturers have increasinglyimplemented pollution prevention policies in which pollutants are mitigated at the source or separated and recovered and then reused or sold. This book is the first to present systematic techniques for cost-effective pollution prevention, altering what has been an art that depends on experience and subjective opinion into a science rooted in fundamental engineering principles and process integration. Step-by-step procedures are presented that are widely applicable to the chemical, petrochemical, petroleum, pharmaceutical, food, and metals industries. Various levels of sophistication ranging from graphical methods to algebraic procedures and mathematical optimization, numerous applications and case studies, and integrated software for optimizing waste recovery systems make Pollution Prevention through Process Integration: Systematic Design Tools a must read for a wide spectrum of practicing engineers, environmental scientists, plant managers, advanced undergraduate and graduate students, and researchers in the areas of pollution prevention andprocess integration. Allows the reader to establish pollution-prevention targets for a process and then develop implementable, cost-effective solutions Contains step-by-step procedures that can be applied to environmental problems in a wide variety of process industries Integrates pollution prevention with other process objectives Author is internationally recognized for pioneering work in developing mass integration science and technology

Computer-aided approaches enable the fast, automated and accurate evaluation of a vast number of process and material characteristics that lead to economically efficient and sustainable CO2 capture systems. In this context, they offer a promising route to exploit experimental know-how and guide the search for novel and efficient CO2 capture processes and materials. This comprehensive volume brings together an extensive collection of systematic computer-aided tools and methods developed in recent years for CO2 capture applications, and presents a structured and organized account of works from internationally acknowledged scientists and engineers, through: modelling of materials and processes based on chemical and physical principles design of materials and processes based on systematic optimization methods utilization of advanced control and integration methods in process and plant-wide operations. The tools and methods described are illustrated through case studies on materials such as solvents, adsorbents and membranes, and on processes such as absorption/desorption, pressure and vacuum swing adsorption, membranes, oxycombustion, solid looping, etc. Process Systems and Materials for CO2 Capture: Modelling, Design, Control and Integration should become the essential introductory resource for researchers and industrial practitioners in the field of CO2 capture technology who wish to explore developments in computer-aided tools and methods. In addition, it aims to introduce CO2 capture technologies to process systems engineers working in the development of general computational tools and methods by highlighting opportunities for new developments to address the needs and challenges in CO2 capture technologies.

Optimization of the use of energy is of fundamental importance, particularly in view of the increasing tensions between energy supply and demand which the world now faces. Chemical processes in general, and distillation processes in particular, account for a significant fraction of the world0́9s energy usage. For example, distillation processes account for around 3% of the energy utilization in the US. There is thus a significant incentive to so design systems that energy utilization is minimized. Much progress has been made by the application of simple methods such as pinch technology (see for instance B. Linnhoff and R. Smith, Section 1.7 of the Heat Exchanger Design Handbook, also published by Begell House), but the problems encountered in complex distillation systems are such that a much higher level approach is needed. Both authors, Michael Georgiadis and Efstratios Pistikopoulos are from the Centre for Process Systems Engineering (CPSE) at Imperial College. CPSE is an international leader in the areas of process simulation, optimization and control. Once can confidently expect that the application of techniques of the type described in this volume will make an important contribution to making the best use of mankind0́9s increasing scarce energy resources.

Traditionally, process design and control system design are performed sequentially. It is only recently displayed that a simultaneous approach to the design and control leads to significant economic benefits and improved dynamic performance during plant operation. Extensive research in issues such as 'interactions of design and control', 'analysis and design of plant wide control systems', 'integrated methods for design and control' has resulted in impressive advances and significant new technologies that have enriched the variety of instruments available for the design engineer in her endeavour to design and operate new processes. The field of integrated process design and control has reached a maturity level that mingles the best from process knowledge and understanding and control theory on one side, with the best from numerical analysis and optimisation on the other. Direct implementation of integrated methods should soon become the mainstream design procedure. Within this context 'The Integration of Process Design and Control', bringing together the developments in a variety of topics related to the integrated design and control, will be a real asset for design engineers, practitioners and researchers. Although the individual chapters reach a depth of analysis close to the frontier of current research status, the structure of the book and the autonomous nature of the chapters make the book suitable for a newcomer in the area. The book comprises four distinct parts: Part A: Process characterization and controllability analysis Part B: Integrated process design and control ⊣ Methods Part C: Plant wide interactions of design and control Part D: Integrated process design and control ⊣ Extensions By the end of the book, the reader will have developed a commanding comprehension of the main aspects of integrated design and control, the ability to critically assess the key characteristics and elements related to the interactions between design and control and the capacity to implement the new technology in practice. * This book brings together the latest developments in a variety of topics related to integrated design and control. * It is a valuable asset for design engineers, practitioners and researchers. * The structure of the book and the nature of its chapters also make it suitable for a newcomer to the field.
