Göran Grimvall is determined to help mere mortals understand how scientists get to the kernel of perplexing problems. Entertaining and enlightening, his latest book uses examples from sports, literature, and nature—as well as from the varied worlds of science—to illustrate how scientists make sense of and explain the world around us. Grimvall's fun-to-read essays and easy-to-follow examples detail how order-of-magnitude estimation, extreme cases, dimensional analysis, and other modeling methods work. They also reveal how nonscientists absorb these concepts and use them at home, school, and work. Grimvall's simple, elegant explanations will help you tap into your inner scientist. Read this book and enjoy your own "Aha!" moment.

This book synthesizes current methods used to quantify functional diversity, providing step-by-step examples for defining functional groups and estimating functional indices. The authors show how to compare communities, and how to analyze changes of diversity along environmental gradients, using real-life examples throughout. One section of the book demonstrates the selection of traits, and the standardization and characterization of ecosystem data. Another section presents methods used to quantify functional diversity, shows how to relate functional diversity with environmental variables and how to connect these to ecosystem services. The concluding section introduces FDiversity, a free program developed by the authors. The reader is guided through every step from software installation and basic functions, to sample and database design, to graphical projection methods, employing case study data to illustrate key concepts.

In this smart, playful, and provocative book, one of today’s most original business thinkers argues that we underestimate the importance of romance in our lives and that we can find it in and through business—by designing products, services, and experiences that connect us with something greater than ourselves. Against the backdrop of eroding trust in capitalism, pervasive technology, big data, and the desire to quantify all of our behaviors, The Business Romantic makes a compelling case that we must meld the pursuit of success and achievement with romance if we want to create an economy that serves our entire selves. A rising star in data analytics who is in love with the intrinsic beauty of spreadsheets; the mastermind behind a brand built on absence; an Argentinian couple who revolutionize shoelaces; the founder of a foodie-oriented start-up that creates intimate conversation spaces; a performance artist who offers fake corporate seminars for real professionals—these are some of the innovators readers will meet in this witty, deeply personal, and rousing ramble through the world of Business Romanticism. The Business Romantic not only provides surprising insights into the emotional and social aspects of business but also presents “Rules of Enchantment” that will help both individuals and organizations construct more meaningful experiences for themselves and others. The Business Romantic offers a radically different view of the good life and outlines how to better meet one’s own desires as well as those of customers, employees, and society. It encourages readers to expect more from companies, to give more of themselves, and to fall back in love with their work and their lives.

This research attempts to evaluate nitrification treatment performance in combined carbon/nitrogen municipal wastewater reactors using traditional physical/chemical methods and modern molecular techniques. Bench scale activated sludge reactors were operated at different SRTs under varying DO levels and temperatures over a 21-month period. Real-time PCR assays were used to determine cell concentrations of total bacterial 16S rDNA, a gross measure of biomass content, the amoA gene, a measure of ammonia-oxidizing bacteria (AOB), and the Nitrospira 16S rDNA gene, a measure of nitrite-oxidizing bacteria (NOB). As expected, gravimetric biomass and total bacterial 16S rDNA levels increased with increasing SRT. Ammonia oxidation rates and N. oligotropha-type AOB concentrations did not follow similar trends with respect to changes in SRT, temperature, and DO nor were they highly correlated. The concentration of available nitrite and SRT were positively correlated with Nitrospira cell densities, while DO concentration and temperature were negatively correlated with NOB levels. The percentage of the total population comprised of AOB and NOB obtained with the real-time PCR assays were compared to predicted values estimated from design equations using typical kinetic parameters. While the percentages of NOB measured using the real-time PCR assay corresponded very well with the predicted values, the measured percentages of AOB were much lower than those estimated from the design equations, suggesting that N. oligotropha-type AOB were not the dominant ammonia-oxidizing species in these reactors. In "Quantified," Whitworth draws lessons from the world s most tech-savvy, high-impact organizations to show how we can make real gains for the environment. The principles of his approach, dubbed quantified conservation, will be familiar to any thriving entrepreneur: situational awareness, bold outcomes, innovation and technology, data and analytics, and gain-focused investment. As President of The Freshwater Trust, Whitworth has put quantified conservation into practice, pioneering the model of a do-tank that is dramatically changing how rivers can get restored across the United States. The stories in "Quantified "highlight the most precious of resourceswaterbut they apply to any environmental effort. Whether in the realm of policy, agriculture, business, or philanthropy, Whitworth is charting a new course for conservation. "

This is a print on demand edition of a hard to find publication. In October 2008, Congress passed the Prioritizing Resources and Organization for Intellectual Property Act of 2008, to improve the effectiveness of U.S. gov¿t. efforts to protect intellectual property rights such as copyrights, patents, and trademarks. The act also required information on the quantification of the impacts of counterfeit and pirated goods. This report: (1) examined existing research on the effects of counterfeiting and piracy on consumers, industries, gov¿t., and the U.S. economy; and (2) identified insights gained from efforts to quantify the effects of counterfeiting and piracy on the U.S. economy. The report reviewed literature and studies quantifying or discussing the economic impacts of counterfeiting and piracy on the U.S. economy, industry, gov¿t., and consumers. Illustrations.

For the Army's future force, what is the appropriate mix of weapons to provide a given outcome, and how might these weapons be employed? This research offers some initial observations into the internetting of fires (IOF) process and a foundation for understanding its relationship to combat outcome. IOF is "the ability to engage a particular target using any number of potential firers who are able to engage due to being on the network which provides targeting information." A key problem with implementing the IOF concept is to determine how to allocate fires among a collection of shooters on a network. The authors describe and demonstrate an analytic tool based on a mathematical optimization to determine that allocation. The authors also describe how the project sponsor used this tool to screen for good mixes of weapons, munitions, and sensors for the Army future force.
