In the first edition of Bioelectricity, Plonsey and Barr provided an introduction to electrophysiology following a quantitative approach. In this second edition they address new discoveries in the field of ion channels. The text is an introduction to electrophysiology utilizing a quantitative approach. It describes the principles of electrical fields, using basic principles from science and engineering while taking the biological applications into consideration. The book thus provides an introduction to the quantitative description of underlying electrophysiology with illustrative application to cardiac electrophysiology and functional electrical stimulation. The book can be used as a bridge to more advanced texts, particularly those that stress a quantitative approach.

The cardiac system represents one of the most exciting challenges to human ingenuity. Critical to our survival, it consists of a tantalizing array of interacting phenomena, from ionic microscopic transport, membrane channels and receptors through cellular metabolism, energy production to fiber mechanics, microcirculation, electrical activation to the global, clinically observed, function, which is measured by pressure, volume, coronary flow, heart rate, shape changes and responds to imposed loads and pharmaceutical challenges. It is a complex interdisciplinary system requiring the joint efforts of the life sciences, the exact sciences, engineering and technology to understand and control the pathologies involved. The Henry Goldberg Workshops were set up to address these challenges. Briefly, our goals are: 1. To foster interdisciplinary interaction between scientists from different areas of cardiology, identify missing links, and catalyze new questions. 2. To relate micro scale cellular phenomena to the global, clinically manifested cardiac function. 3. To relate conceptual modeling and quantitative analysis to experimental and clinical data. 4. To encourage international cooperation so as to disperse medical and technological know how and lead to better understanding of the cardiac system. Today we celebrate the 7th birthday of a dream come true; a dream to bring together the diversified expertise in the various fields of science, engineering and medicine, to relate to the numerous interactive parameters and disciplines involved in the performance of the heart.

This is the fifth volume in this series on quantitative coronary arteriography (QCA) published over the last nine years. Research and applications in this exciting, field are covered in a total of 26 chapters by world renowned experts. This book is subdivided into a total of 6 parts, each emphasizing the latest progress in these respective fields. In Part One a comprehensive overview is given of the current knowledge and research in endothelial function, which is of eminent importance for the further understanding of the pathophysiology of coronary artery disease in patients. Fortunately, the use of QCA tools is not limited anymore to leading research institutes; over the last several years these tools have been installed in many cardiology centers world wide. To understand the current possibili ties, limitations and future expectations of QCA, several relevant topics are presented in Part Two. First of all, the questions about why and how QCA systems should be validated both at the development site and at the appli cation sites, and whether data from different vendors and core laboratories can be pooled, are discussed. As the X-ray cardiovascular world steadily moves into the digital imaging era, differences and similarities between the conventional cinefilm and the modern digital approaches are presented. Cur rently. the widespread use of digital imaging is still hindered by the lack of proper archival and exchange media. Requirements and possible solutions for this problem are handled in this section as well.

In June 1989, a third conference concentrating on the progress in quantita tive coronary angiography and related techniques was held in Rotterdam, again very successful as the two preceding events in 1985 and 1987. Tech nical as well as clinical aspects of digital and digitized coronarography, morphometry, parametric imaging and functional quantification of the human coronary circulation were presented and discussed by prominent exponents of those groups who have been active in this particular field for many years. This book contains the chapters representing the lectures held by leading experts during the symposium that update the knowledge currently available, including most recent aspects in angioscopy and intravascular ultrasound imaging. It also includes a historical review on the development of angiogra phic techniques from the very early days on to our times given by one of the pioneers in heart catheterization and angiography, Dr. Kurt Amplatz. Those who had the chance to listen to his talk, will surely remember his impressive, humorous lecture as one of the highlights of this meeting.

Implantable cardioverter-defibrillators (ICDs) are electronic devices installed in the chest to prevent sudden death caused by abnormally fast heart rhythms. Cardiac electrophysiologists are the physicians usually responsible for implanting and maintaining these devices. The technology for ICDs is rapidly evolving, and the articles in this issue will help electrophysiologists to keep up to date with the current generation of ICDs, including selection of patients who are appropriate for the device, monitoring patients after the device is implanted, and troubleshooting problems with the device.

The goal of this book is to provide an integrated overview of some intriguing problems of cardiac electrophysiology. Topics have been selected that encompass mainly aspects which have been a matter of concern and interest in our Department over the past few years. We requested from the authors not only that they provide information about their own investiga tions, but also that they integrate their results with those published by oth ers. Furthermore, we urged them to be speculative in their interpretations in order to encourage exploration of related areas of investigation. To this end, the authors have presented their ,contributions in sufficient detail so that the information may not only educate the reader but also encourage and chal lenge him. It is through the concept of total integration -from in vitro to in vivo, from animal to man, from the pure scientist to the clinician -that we hope to advance our understanding of cardiac electrophysiology. The book brings together scientific work in which important advances have been made in the seventies, and in which even more substantial pro gress is likely to be made in the present decade. The chapters have been written by investigators who are authorities in the relevant scientific field. No attempt at summarizing has been made as this may not seldom lead to oversimplification, a risk that we do not dare take. The table of contents and list of contributors are, in this regard, self-explanatory.
