(Music Pro Guide Books & DVDs). Recording Unhinged: Creative and Unconventional Music Recording Techniques is a dare a challenge for those who think recording music should be done a certain way. Sylvia Massy, engineer, mixer, and producer of such all-time great artists as Tool, Prince, Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, R.E.M., Oingo Boingo, Johnny Cash, Red Hot Chili Peppers, and many more, invites you to put everything you've ever known or learned about recording aside and dive head-long into the unknown. You might just find the doors blown off your conception of how great music should be recorded. If you want to take your creativity and freedom to a brand new level, open your mind and hear the sermons that Sylvia Massy preaches! She lives in a world far outside the norm, working in ways that, though frightening to some, yield results that are emotionally powerful, incredibly personal, gut-wrenching, organic, and even (based on her iconic client list) extremely commercially successful. Recording Unhinged contains many full-color R. Crumb-style illustrations by Massy, herself! In addition to being an A-list engineer/producer, she is a gifted artist! Her illustrations depict real and imaginary sessions and recording situations so the images move beyond literal demonstrations into the root-level heart and soul of her passion for recording and music! Also, included are lists, recipes, schematics, quotes, and stories, plus Massy interviews countless industry icons who shake-it-up in the music world.

(Book). Shooting pianos, miking chickens, recording bass (guitar, that is) on a submarine. These are some of the unusual recording techniques examined in the book, Recording Unhinged: Creative and Unconventional Music Recording Techniques . Because we all like to "draw outside the lines," this collection of Sylvia Massy's original illustrations from the book is a great way to whet your appetite for some real adventurous recording. Add your own color and excite your imagination! Since we're all about getting a little unhinged, you might want to make it fun. Try coloring with strange materials while you're at it. Toe-nail polish and highlighter pens. Lipstick and blush. Spilled coffee. You figure it out. Enjoy! And one last tip: you'll find a few special illustrations here that aren't in Recording Unhinged: Creative and Unconventional Music Recording Techniques , including one that if you fold it a certain way (look for the arrows), Neil Peart will turn into the drummer from the Stray Cats, Slim Jim Phantom!

(Technical Reference). Here, in a replica of a recently exhumed tome (miraculously preserved within the chassis of a Sound Tools rig at the bottom of the La Brea Tar Pits), we present Mixerman's philosophies on the art of mixing. Well known for his hilarious exploits in The Daily Adventures of Mixerman , the author now provides his tactical reasoning without the colored lens of absurdist big-label disasters. In Rev 2 , Mixerman distills a successful mixing career's worth of lessons and realizations into understandable and sensible terms for both enthusiastic musician and professional technician alike. This enhanced multimedia edition brings mixers deeper into the concepts covered in the text. In nearly two hours of video clips, Mixerman provides invaluable insight into the various aspects of mixing: creating the rough mix, EQ, parallel compression, automation, and more. As Mixerman points out, "If you change how you think about mixing, you'll be well on your way to learning how to mix." This new edition features an updated "Gear" chapter.

(Book). Mixerman is a recording engineer working with a famous producer on the debut album of an unknown band with a giant recording budget. Mixerman is supposed to be writing about recording techniques, but somehow, through that prism, he has hit upon a gripping story. Like all great narratives, Mixerman's diary has many anti-heroes for whom we, the readers, can have nothing but contempt. The band consists of the four most dislikable human beings you can imagine. The singer is vain and pretentious. The guitarist is a serious depressive. The drummer is as "dumb as cotton," and the bassist is merely mean and petty, making him the only one that Mixerman can stand. All four of them hate each other's guts, and they haven't even been on tour yet. Mixerman takes you through the recording process of a bidding war band in over their heads with a famous record producer (also in over his head). Many find Mixerman's diary entries side-splittingly funny. Some find them maddening. And a select few feel they are the most despicable accountings of record-making ever documented.
