In recent years, as educators across the nation have worked to help all students meet learning standards, preventative intervention models such as Response to Intervention (RtI) have been adopted in schools. In spite of the elevation of the RtI concept as one method for determining specific learning disabilities, legal language defining RtI is limited and vague, leaving states, districts and schools with unanswered questions regarding implementation and procedures. In particular, schools with a high percentage of students who are at risk of failing to meet learning standards find it difficult to implement an effective RtI program. This study uses quasi-experimental research to examine the relationship between the implementation of the "Focused Response to Intervention" model and math test scores in students in the fifth grade in order to determine if this one method of intervention is effective. The results of this study did not show significant improvement in test scores. Teachers participating in the study found this method of RtI to be helpful, so there is room for further studies to examine the long-term effect of Focused RtI in classrooms. This study will be beneficial to educators who desire to implement a successful RtI where the needs for intervention overwhelm traditional RtI resources.

This book, which is the first in the series, Elementary Math Intervention, offers a way to implement the interview building-wide so as to monitor and track the numeracy development of struggling math students. It includes an overview of the theory of response to intervention, what to do instructionally for students that fail to meet the benchmarks on the assessment, and what to do for students who fail to make progress after intervention has been implemented. There is also a chapter on working with gifted and talented math students.

A review of literature shows that it is imperative to provide Response to Intervention intensively and school wide. Additionally, effective strategies must be used, so that the time when instruction is being provided is maximized. Lastly, if done correctly, Response to Intervention can have lasting effects on meeting student needs and cutting down on special education identification for many students. A mixed methods approach was used to examine data collected on students who were part of a middle school math Response to Intervention program, as well speaking with them about their experiences. Combining data with the thoughts of the students who Response to Intervention directly affected brought deeper understanding into what works for students in a setting such as this.
