Thousands of pregnant women pass through our nation’s jails every year. What happens to them as they carry their pregnancies in a space of punishment? In this time when the public safety net is frayed, incarceration has become a central and racialized strategy for managing the poor. Using her ethnographic fieldwork and clinical work as an ob-gyn in a women’s jail, Carolyn Sufrin explores how jail has, paradoxically, become a place where women can find care. Focusing on the experiences of incarcerated pregnant women as well as on the practices of the jail guards and health providers who care for them, Jailcare describes the contradictory ways that care and maternal identity emerge within a punitive space presumed to be devoid of care. Sufrin argues that jail is not simply a disciplinary institution that serves to punish. Rather, when understood in the context of the poverty, addiction, violence, and racial oppression that characterize these women’s lives and their reproduction, jail can become a safety net for women on the margins of society.

Inmates in correctional facilities suffering from psychiatric or substance abuse disorders sometimes display any one of a number of frightening behaviors: verbal outbursts, physical threats and even violence. This comprehensive guidebook offers correctional officers in jail settings strategies to keep themselves and inmates as safe as possible, while functioning at the highest level of professionalism. The first two sections of the book discuss the environment within jail and in the surrounding community that chronically mentally ill individuals cycle within. The third section is concerned with threat assessment: the authors offer concrete skills on the development of a safety mindset. In the fourth section, the authors focus on how to achieve a state of integrity and powerful calm. They offer specific strategies, including a method of breathing for the purpose of maintaining one's center in crisis situations. They then discuss specific behaviors ranging from confusion and obsessive concerns to psychosis, mania and acute disorganization. In one very important section, they discuss interactions with opportunistic and manipulative inmates, people who present a danger to the psychological and physical well-being of anyone with whom they come in contact. They then move on to a discussion of aggression, whether directed at the correctional officer or others. There is a specific section set aside on dealing with aggressive youthful offenders. The authors discuss how to de-escalate aggressive and chaotic inmates once a crisis is in play. De-escalation tactics are specific - one learns how to immediately recognize what mode of aggression other person is displaying, and the, one can quickly and effectively implement the de-escalation tactics that are best suited to deal with it.In three essential appendices, they present protocols for physical and chemical restraint, current information on positional and compression asphyxiation (authored by Dr. Gary Vilke), and a protocol, specific to fire and EMS, on excited delirium (authored by Lt. Michael Paulus, ret.)

There is a simple and inexpensive solution to many of our country's most pressing problems: Prison Education. Educating our prisoners has proven to be the most effective and the least costly answer to reducing recidivism - and if we can reduce recidivism by even a modest 10% we can reduce our national and states' budgets by $60 billion to $70 billion every year! We can reduce crime significantly and make our communities safer. And we can transform wasted individuals who know no other way to survive except crime into productive, tax-paying citizens who support their families and get them off welfare, citizens who live as consumers, further supporting the national economy. People who have been educated almost always see to it that their children are educated, so it would mean a continuing decrease in crime and expenditures for new prison facilities year after year. It works! It's been studied. It's been proven. And, sadly, it's been ignored. Today, prison education is almost non-existent. In the face of overwhelming evidence, policy makers and the general public still do not support post-secondary higher education in prisons. Year after year, even basic correctional educational programs are further reduced. Computers are not allowed. The results? Prisoner unrest and violence. Then we need even more money for additional security. This book was written to explain the enormity of its impact, not just on prisoners, but on our entire society and our nation's prosperity and safety, in the hope that greater understanding will result in wise legislative action for our common good. Prison education is a concept whose time has come. It is time to stop studying the issue and stop discoursing. It is time to start the ball rolling and do something about it.
