Im Zuge der Forschung zum Professionswissen von Lehrkräften ist insbesondere die Frage nach der Entwicklung des Professionswissens im Verlauf der Professionalisierung von Lehrkräften in den Fokus des Interesses gerückt. Hierbei spielen insbesondere die Lerngelegenheiten, die sich Lehrkräften sowohl im Rahmen der Lehrerausbildung in Studium und Referendariat als auch im späteren Berufsleben bieten, eine besondere Rolle. Ziel der vorliegenden Studie ist es deshalb, die Entwicklung des Professionswissens von Chemiereferendarinnen und -referendaren in Nordrhein-Westfalen zu untersuchen. Dieses erfolgte quantitativ in Form eines Papier-Bleistift-Testinstruments und im Zuge einer qualitativen Ergänzungsstudie mittels Interviews. Ebenfalls analysiert wurde der Einfluss der Schulform, an der die angehenden Chemielehrkräfte im Referendariat tätig waren, sowie der der Verkürzung der Referendariatsdauer. Die Ergebnisse zeigen, dass sich nicht in allen Dimensionen des Professionswissens statistisch bedeutsame Veränderungen des Wissens während des Referendariats ergeben. Im Zuge der qualitativen Ergänzungsstudie wurden jedoch darüber hinaus weitere Bereiche der Professionalität angehender Chemielehrkräfte identifiziert, die sich ebenfalls verändert haben. Diese betrafen neben der Gesprächsführung insbesondere die Planung, Durchführung und Reflexion des eigenen Unterrichts.
