"Milwaukee's story is unique in that its struggle for integration and quality education has been so closely tied to [school] choice." --from the Introduction "Educating Milwaukee: How One City's History of Segregation and Struggle Shaped Its Schools" traces the origins of the modern school choice movement, which is growing in strength throughout the United States. Author James K. Nelsen follows Milwaukee's tumultuous education history through three eras--"no choice," "forced choice," and "school choice." Nelsen details the whole story of Milwaukee's choice movement through to modern times when Milwaukee families have more schooling options than ever--charter schools, open enrollment, state-funded vouchers, neighborhood schools--and yet Milwaukee's impoverished African American students still struggle to succeed and stay in school. "Educating Milwaukee" chronicles how competing visions of equity and excellence have played out in one city's schools in the modern era, offering both a cautionary tale and a "choice" example.

The destruction of wildlife habitats ... organized crime ... AIDS ... illiteracy ... acid rain -- these are among the 130,000 topics documented and discussed in the new edition of the Encyclopedia. But its truly unique goal is to present this complex set of issues in ways that facilitate an organized response. To this end, the book also focuses on the complex relationship between problems and society's own ideological relationship with these problems. How do human priorities and perceptions aggravate or enable problems? What are the established and alternative responses? The Encyclopedia contains over 158,000 cross-references between entries, an extensive 91,000 practical key term index, bibliographies, and full cross-referencing to the Yearbook of International Organizations. For anyone concerned with the world community, here are the means to explore and participate in today's most crucial endeavors. A new addition to the work, Volume 3, Action -- Strategies -- Solutions, presents strategies for coping with world problems, with an emphasis on vicious self-sustaining cycles of problems.

Speakers on environmental issues represented government agencies and legislative houses, international institutions, businesses, and academia and included U.S. Representative Karan English and Madeleine May Kunin, Deputy Secretary of the U.S. Department of Education. The proceedings are divided into five major areas. General session presentations, which include both keynote and featured speakers, include topics on environmental education legislation, reform, and perspectives on the Tennessee River and the Ukraine. Conference workshops include businesses in partnership in education, developing teacher training programs, student assessment, and ecological economics. Symposia cover such topics as wildlife, environmental education advocacy, role of government, adult education, multimedia, sustainable development, and environmental education research. Conference papers were grouped into six related strands: (1) "Educating about Environmental Issues and Policies"; (2) "Curriculum and Teaching Strategies"; (3) "Nonformal Programs"; (4) "International Education Programs"; (5) "From Research To Application in Environmental Education; and (6) "Promoting Environmental Education Programs."
