One of the basic principles that underpin the learning sciences is to improve theories of learning through the design of powerful learning environments that can foster meaningful learning. Learning sciences researchers prefer to research learning in authentic contexts. They collect both qualitative and quantitative data from multiple perspectives and follow developmental micro-genetic or historical approaches to data observation. Learning sciences researchers conduct research with the intention of deriving design principles through which change and innovation can be enacted. Their goal is to conduct research that can sustain transformations in schools. We need to be cognizant of research that can inform and lead to sustainable and scalable models of innovation. In order to do so, we need to take an inter-disciplinary view of learning, such as that embraced by the learning sciences. This publication focuses on learning sciences in the Asia-Pacific context. There are researchers and young academics within the Asia-Pacific Society for Computers in Education (APSCE) community who are concerned with issues of conducting research that can be translated into practice. Changes in practice are especially important to Asian countries because their educational systems are more centralized. That is why there is a need to reform pedagogy in a more constructivist and social direction in a scalable way.

This book reconceptualizes social studies teaching and learning in ways that will help prepare students to live in "new times" – prepared for new forms of labor in the post-industrial economy, equipped to handle new and emerging technologies and function in the new media age, and prepared to understand different perspectives to participate in an increasingly diverse, multicultural global society. Mark Baildon and James Damico offer an integrated theoretical framework and corresponding set of web-based technology tools to guide a reconceptualized social studies education and provide concrete examples of teachers and students wrestling with core challenges involved in doing inquiry-based investigations with web-based texts. The authors also lay out a range of suggestions for social studies and literacy teachers, curriculum developers, teacher educators, and researchers interested in enacting and researching social studies as new literacies for living in the global society in the 21st century.

This comprehensive introduction to teaching social studies to middle and secondary school students includes many new ideas for teaching in our 21stcentury classrooms. Continuing the tradition of social studies innovator Peter Martorella and taking a constructivist approach, the authors address current issues such as diversity, technology, inclusion, and teacher certification. Martorella believed that the fundamental purpose of social studies should be the development of reflective, competent, and concerned citizens. The goal of the book is to assist preservice and inservice middle and secondary teachers in becoming more effective teachers of social studies. To do this, the authors draw on theory, research, and the wisdom of experienced teachers. The text is organized in three parts: the origins of social studies, developing reflective and concerned citizens, and analyzing and improving the teaching of social studies. The book continues to address the need of helping students to develop a global perspective and become open-minded reflective citizens of the world. The blend of teacher insight, current research findings, and well-grounded theories give new and experienced educators the foundation they need to nurture and sustain effective social studies instruction.
