From the author of Jurassic Park, Timeline, and Congo comes a psychological thriller about a group of scientists who investigate a spaceship discovered on the ocean floor. In the middle of the South Pacific, a thousand feet below the surface, a huge vessel is unearthed. Rushed to the scene is a team of American scientists who descend together into the depths to investigate the astonishing discovery. What they find defies their imaginations and mocks their attempts at logical explanation. It is a spaceship, but apparently it is undamaged by its fall from the sky. And, most startling, it appears to be at least three hundred years old, containing a terrifying and destructive force that must be controlled at all costs.

Circles and spheres are central objects in geometry. Mappings that take circles to circles or spheres to spheres have special roles in metric and conformal geometry. An example of this is Lie's sphere geometry, whose group of transformations is precisely the conformal group. Coolidge's treatise looks at systems of circles and spheres and the geometry and groups associated to them. It was written (1916) at a time when Lie's enormous influence on the field was still widely felt. Today, there is a renewed interest in the geometry of special geometric configurations. Coolidge has examined many of the most intuitive: linear systems of circles, circles orthogonal to a given sphere, and so on. He also examines the differential and projective geometry of the space of all spheres in a given space. Through the simple vehicles of circles and spheres, Coolidge makes contact with diverse areas of mathematics: conformal transformations and analytic functions, projective and contact geometry, and Lie's theory of continuous groups, to name a few. The interested reader will be well rewarded by a study of this remarkable book.

The relationship between civil society and public life is in the forefront of contemporary discussion. No single scholarly voice informs this discussion more than that of Jürgen Habermas. His contributions have shaped the nature of debates over critical theory, feminism, cultural studies, and democratic politics. In this book, scholars from a wide range of disciplines respond to Habermas's most directly relevant work, The Structural Transformation of the Public Sphere. From political theory to cultural criticism, from ethics to gender studies, from history to media studies, these essays challenge, refine, and extend our understanding of the social foundations and changing character of democracy and public discourse.Craig Calhoun is Professor of Sociology and History and Director of the Program of Social Theory and CrossCultural Studies at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.Contributors: Hannah Arendt. “Mills is fast becoming the new master of gripping and intelligent page-turners.”—Tom Clancy The videotapes arrive at television stations across the nation. Their chilling message: Al Qaeda has secured a rocket launcher on American soil. Their potential targets: U.S. civilians. Their ultimate threat: they will attack. Anytime. Anywhere. Amid national chaos, the FBI calls upon one of its best agents for a final desperate mission. But no one—on either side—realizes how deep or how far the sphere of influence has spread. “An interesting and enjoyable piece of work . . . the kind of dark romp that Lawrence Sanders or Ross Thomas might have produced in their heyday.”—The Washington Post Book World “Great fun.”—The Houston Chronicle “Engrossing.”—Publishers Weekly

This major work retraces the emergence and development of the Bourgeois public sphere - that is, a sphere which was distinct from the state and in which citizens could discuss issues of general interest. In analysing the historical transformations of this sphere, Habermas recovers a concept which is of crucial significance for current debates in social and political theory. Habermas focuses on the liberal notion of the bourgeois public sphere as it emerged in Europe in the early modern period. He examines both the writings of political theorists, including Marx, Mill and de Tocqueville, and the specific institutions and social forms in which the public sphere was realized. This brilliant and influential work has been widely recognized for many years as a classic of contemporary social and political thought, of interest to students and scholars throughout the social sciences and humanities.

This well-illustrated book—in color throughout—presents a thorough introduction to the mathematics of Buckminster Fuller’s invention of the geodesic dome, which paved the way for a flood of practical applications as diverse as weather forecasting and fish farms. The author explains the principles of spherical design and the three main categories of subdivision based on geometric solids (polyhedra). He illustrates how basic and advanced CAD techniques apply to spherical subdivision and covers modern applications in product design, engineering, science, games, and sports balls.
