In April of 1846, Sarah Graves was twenty-one and in love with a young man who played the violin. But she was torn. Her mother, father, and eight siblings were about to disappear over the western horizon forever, bound for California. Sarah could not bear to see them go out of her life, and so days before the planned departure she married the young man with the violin, and the two of them threw their lot in with the rest of Sarah's family. On April 12, they rolled out of the yard of their homestead in three ox-drawn wagons. Seven months later, after joining a party of emigrants led by George Donner, Sarah and her family arrived at Truckee Lake in the Sierra Nevada Mountains just as the first heavy snows of the season closed the pass ahead of them. After a series of desperate attempts to cross the mountains, the party improvised cabins and slaughtered what remained of their emaciated livestock. By early December they were beginning to starve. Sarah's father, a Vermonter, was the only member of the party familiar with snowshoes. Under his instruction, fifteen sets of snowshoes were hastily constructed from oxbows and rawhide, and on December 15, Sarah and fourteen other relatively young, healthy people set out for California on foot, hoping to get relief for the others. Over the next thirty-two days they endured almost unfathomable hardships and horrors. In this gripping narrative, Daniel James Brown takes the reader along on every painful footstep of Sarah's journey. Along the way, he weaves into the story revealing insights garnered from a variety of modern scientific perspectives–psychology, physiology, forensics, and archaeology–producing a tale that is not only spell-binding but richly informative.

Stars Above, Earth Below uses photographs and sky charts to form a connection between what is seen on the ground and in the sky, and looks at the deeper scientific meaning behind these sights. Nordgren describes other objects in the Solar System with features similar to those on Earth and links the geological features seen in the national parks to the very latest NASA spacecraft discoveries on other planets and their moons. Additionally, historical context is discussed to show why we humans (who have lived in and around our national parts for tens of thousands of years) have always been astronomers. The first book to make direct connections between astronomy and the landscapes, processes and cultures one experiences in the US National Parks Each chapter ties a specific astronomical phenomenon to a particular National Park or type of park and concludes with a “See for yourself” section that shows you how to see the planets, stars, nebulae, moons, etc. that are described within that chapter A personal guide showing the reader the astronomical phenomena that you can see for yourself when visiting the U.S. National Parks

This reissue of Stars Above, Stars Below, originally published in 1984, will reacquaint readers with the early work of Margaret Hasse, one of that remarkable generation of women poets who came of age in the 1970s. Although Hasse was only 34 when the collection won the annual Minnesota Voices Project sponsored by New Rivers Press, its unique blend of lyric and narrative qualities already carried what Patricia Hampl recently referred to as ''a rare 'old soul' authority.''

This is not a book on just lecturing anybody, ____ it is just something that God said to write, and put together as he advised me to do. You will find some illustrations are not just our own experienced stories, but from others that willingly shared too, for the purpose of being able to point out viewpoints with good morals, or words to ponder on. Everyday, while I wrote, I had no clue where to begin, or where to actually stop. I learned it was best to flow along, by allowing God to show me suitable words to write, or when he reminded me of something that either happened year's prior, or something of recent that had been spoken to me by a family member or a friend. We can discuss the topic of "Traditionalism" later in class, when I will allow you to bring your own customs from ancestors to posterity by oral communication, while sharing with classmates your stories. We will also welcome your narrated tales by mail, to be used later on. Please send them to the Author, for sharing in the Cell Group. You should keep in mind, while reading the pages within this book, by trying to remember that, "Our self", is an individual person, and that each of us, have a unique part of the influence, which God hath created equally in us all. He hath given to you and I, the abilities to use our gifts and talents, to share love with someone else along the way. Come and experience with me today, as we give unto others, the joy of what the Lord hath yet in store for us to conquer.
