For too many students, mathematics consists of facts in a vacuum, to be memorized because the instructor says so, and to be forgotten when the course of study is completed. In this all-too-common scenario, young learners often miss the chance to develop skills—specifically, reasoning skills—that can serve them for a lifetime. The elegant pages of Teaching Mathematical Reasoning in Secondary School Classrooms propose a more positive solution by presenting a reasoning- and discussion-based approach to teaching mathematics, emphasizing the connections between ideas, or why math works. The teachers whose work forms the basis of the book create a powerful record of methods, interactions, and decisions (including dealing with challenges and impasses) involving this elusive topic. And because this approach shifts the locus of authority from the instructor to mathematics itself, students gain a system of knowledge that they can apply not only to discrete tasks relating to numbers, but also to the larger world of people and the humanities. A sampling of the topics covered: Whole-class discussion methods for teaching mathematics reasoning. Learning mathematical reasoning through tasks. Teaching mathematics using the five strands. Classroom strategies for promoting mathematical reasoning. Maximizing student contributions in the classroom. Overcoming student resistance to mathematical conversations. Teaching Mathematical Reasoning in Secondary School Classrooms makes a wealth of cutting-edge strategies available to mathematics teachers and teacher educators. This book is an invaluable resource for researchers in mathematics and curriculum reform and of great interest to teacher educators and teachers.

This fourth volume in the series of yearbooks by the Association of Mathematics Educators in Singapore entitled Reasoning, Communication and Connections in Mathematics is unique in that it focuses on a single theme in mathematics education. The objective is to encourage teachers and researchers to advance reasoning, communication and connections in mathematics classrooms. Several renowned international researchers in the field have published their work in this volume. The fifteen chapters of the book illustrate evidence-based practices that school teachers and researchers can experiment with in their own classrooms to bring about meaningful learning outcomes. Three major themes: mathematical tasks, classroom discourse, and connectivity within and beyond mathematics, shape the ideas underpinning reasoning, communication and connections in these chapters. The book makes a significant contribution towards mathematical processes essential for learners of mathematics. It is a good resource for mathematics educators and research students. Since its first publication, Teaching Secondary School Mathematics has established itself as one of the most respected and popular texts for both pre-service and in-service teachers. This new edition has been fully revised and updated to reflect the major changes brought about by the introduction of the Australian Curriculum: Mathematics, as well as discussing significant research findings, the evolution of digital teaching and learning technologies, and the implications of changes in education policies and practices. The mathematical proficiencies that now underpin the Australian curriculum -- understanding, fluency, problem solving and reasoning -- are covered in depth in Part 1, and a new section is devoted to the concept of numeracy. The chapter on digital tools and resources has been significantly expanded to reflect the growing use of these technologies in the classroom, while the importance of assessment is recognised with new material on assessment for learning and as learning, along with a consideration of policy development in this area. Important research findings on common student misconceptions and new and effective approaches for teaching key mathematical skills are covered in detail. As per the first edition readers will find a practical guide to pedagogical approaches and the planning and enactment of lessons together with enhanced chapters on teaching effectively for diversity, managing issues of inequality and developing effective relationships with parents and the community. This book is the essential pedagogical tool for every emerging teacher of secondary school mathematics. 'The text offers an excellent resource for all of those involved in the preparation of secondary mathematics teachers, with links to research literature, exemplars of classroom practices, and instructional activities that encourage readers to actively examine and critique practices within their own educational settings.' Professor Glenda Anthony, Institute of Education, Massey University 'A rich and engaging textbook that covers all of the important aspects of learning to become an effective secondary mathematics teacher. The second edition of this text ... is further enhanced with updated references to the Australian Curriculum, NAPLAN, STEM, current Indigenous, social justice and gender inequity issues, and the place of Australian mathematics curricula on the world stage.' Dr Christine Ormond, Senior Lecturer, Edith Cowan University

Reasoning and sense making are at the heart of the high school curriculum and are essential to student's future success. This volume is one of a series of books that support NCTM's Focus in High School Mathematics: Reasoning and Sense Making by providing additional guidance for ensuring that reasoning and sense making are part of the mathematics experiences of all high school students every day. The authors examine key elements of technology for mathematics teaching and the use of technology as a tool for developing understanding. Through numerous examples and figures the authors demonstrate how technology can greatly enhance classroom mathematical lessons and increase students' application of reasoning and sense making. The use of technology to assist and advance students' efforts to reason and make sense of mathematics in grades 9-12 must be a high priority for school mathematics. This book offers a blueprint for using technology to support reasoning and sense making in the high school curriculum. - Publisher.

Contemporary concerns in mathematics education recognize that in the increasingly technological and globalized world, with concomitant change in population demographics (e.g. immigration, urbanization) and a change in the status of languages (e.g. English as a dominant language of science and technology) multilingualism in classrooms is a norm rather than an exception. Shifts in perspective also view language not simply as an instrument for cognition with all learners equipped with this instrument in service of learning, although clearly in the classroom that remains of importance. Rather, it is now also being acknowledged that language use is inherently political, so that the language that gets official recognition in the classroom is invariably the language of the powerful elite, or the dominant societal language, or in the case of post-colonial contexts the language of the colonisers. From this socio-political role of language in learning quite different issues arise for teaching, learning and curriculum for linguistically marginalized learners than that of cognition (e.g. immigrants, second language learners, other). Policies on language in education are being considered and re-considered with specific reference to mathematics teaching and learning. Given the policy environment, globally the proposed publication is timely. This edited collection draws on recent, emerging insights and understandings about the approaches to improving policy and practice in mathematics education and mathematics teacher education in multilingual settings. It presents, and discusses critically, examples of work from a range of contexts and uses these examples to draw out key issues for research in education in language diverse settings including teaching, learning, curriculum and fit these with appropriate policy and equity approaches. With contributions from all over the world, especially novice researchers in low income countries, this book is a valuable resource for courses in Mathematics Education and related social sciences both at the graduate and undergraduate levels, as well as for students of international development.

Teaching Mathematics in Grades 6 - 12 by Randall E. Groth explores how research in mathematics education can inform teaching practice in grades 6-12. The author shows preservice mathematics teachers the value of being a “researcher—constantly experimenting with methods for developing students’ mathematical thinking—and connecting this research to practices that enhance students’ understanding of the material. Ultimately, preservice teachers will gain a deeper understanding of the types of mathematical knowledge students bring to school, and how students’ thinking may develop in response to different teaching strategies.

The book is centered on how major curriculum reform shapes mathematics and the professional practices of teachers. This book documents in real time the implementation of a major government numeracy programme and its receipt by trainee and new teachers. It documents the complete life span of that initiative. The account is targeted at an international readership in terms of how curriculum reform more generally shapes mathematics in schools and the practices of teachers. A key dimension of the book is an alternative view of mathematics education research in which the task of teacher development is understood at policy level where large numbers of teachers were interviewed to assess how policies were being processed through individuals. The book provides an easy and accessible commentary utilising contemporary theory to describe how such teachers reconcile their personal aspirations with the external demands they encounter in negotiating their identities as professional teachers.
