For over fifty years Dr. Robert Spencer (1889-1969) practiced medicine in the small coal-mining town of Ashland, PA. As the only town doctor, he was known by everyone as a dedicated medical professional who spent long hours at his clinic, charged a modest fee for his services, never turned anyone away who couldn't pay, and was the person the townspeople turned to with their many ailments and injuries, from Black Lung Disease and mangled limbs crushed in mining accidents to tonsillectomies. His reputation for great skill, integrity, and kindness assured him a steady stream of patients throughout his long career. But he also gained another kind of notoriety as well, about which there was generally a discreet silence in the town: he would willingly perform safe and reliable abortions. Women in trouble could consult him without shame or fear, and he would perform the procedure quickly and efficiently with no questions asked. This was unique in the era before Roe v. Wade, especially in the 1920s when Dr. Spencer opened his practice. As a result he soon became a much-sought-after physician, to whom doctors throughout the country would refer women who wished to end their pregnancies.Of course, many disapproved of his not-so-secret and illegal abortion practice. Despite the townspeople's reliance on him for his medical expertise, over the years he was blackmailed, robbed, often shunned in public, censured by the American Medical Association, and arrested by the police. Nonetheless, he never spent a night in jail and his eleven-room clinic always remained opened for business. As his reputation grew, his detractors labeled him King of the Abortionists, and when he died in 1969 his death notice was announced on the national news with the estimate that he had performed 100,000 abortions. This is the first biography of Dr. Spencer. Vincent Genovese has done yeoman's work in reconstructing Dr. Spencer's life and career by researching his correspondence, interviewing surviving Ashland residents who knew him, and combing through old newspaper archives. This unique biography is a must read for anyone interested in the issue of abortion.Vincent J. Genovese, M.S. (Minersville, PA), a retired high school guidance counselor, is a freelance writer currently working on a novel.

If you believe, as I once did, that we can reduce violent crime by simply restricting gun ownership, you should read this book. It will change your basic beliefs. -Steven B. Duke, Professor of Law, Yale UniversityThe gun control debate is often obscured by strong emotions and unproven assumptions. According to conventional wisdom accidents with handguns account for a significant number of deaths among children, gun owners endanger themselves more than they ward off potential criminal assailants, and there is a widespread legal consensus that the Second Amendment does not support the individual right to bear arms. All of these assumptions, and many others, say researchers Gary Kleck and Don Kates, are contradicted by the weight of criminological and legal evidence. Hoping to disentangle myth from reality, the authors summarize the results and policy implications of recent state-of-the-art research on guns and violence in accessible, nontechnical language.Among the topics addressed are media bias in coverage of gun issues, the distorting effects that a covert prohibitionist agenda has on the debate over more moderate measures for reducing gun violence, the frequency and effectiveness of the defensive use of guns, and a close analysis of the Second Amendment. This well-argued and scrupulously researched volume is essential for any full understanding of the complex gun issue.

For more than one hundred twenty-five years virtually every history book in print has contended that no white man survived the Battle of the Little Big Horn, where Custer made his famous last stand. This book provides compelling proof that at least one member of the Seventh Cavalry, a man named William Heath, did indeed escape. In this intriguing analysis of hitherto neglected historical documents, Vincent J. Genovese provides verifiable evidence that dispels the long-held myth that none of Custer's soldiers survived the massacre that took place in Montana on June 25, 1876.Genovese chronicles the life of this Lazarus of the Little Big Horn who joined the army at age 27 after fleeing from Pennsylvania under threats on his life. Documents show that Billy Heath lived in a small coal-mining town in Pennsylvania and that he enlisted in the Seventh Cavalry in 1875, not long before the fateful battle. Further, U.S. Army records verify that he was one of the soldiers at the Little Big Horn. His name also appears on a list of those killed in action and is inscribed on the official monument that stands at the battle site. What makes Genovese's contribution to the history of this famous event so interesting are public records that he here introduces, which show indisputably that William Heath lived on for fourteen more years after the Battle of the Little Big Horn. Birth records from his hometown in Schuylkill County, PA, indicate that he fathered seven children before dying in obscurity. His gravestone still exists in the local cemetery. This is a unique and fascinating re-evaluation of a storied event in American history, which will surely provoke controversy.Vincent J. Genovese is the author of The Angel of Ashland: Practicing Compassion and Tempting Fate-A Biography of Robert Spencer, M.D.
