The Philokalia is an important collection of writings by Fathers of the Eastern Church dating from the fourth to the fourteenth century. It exists in three versions: the Greek, complied in the eighteenth century; the Slavonic; and the Russian. The Russian text, translated by Bishop Theophan the Recluse in the nineteenth century, and consisting of five volumes (with which a sixth is sometimes associated), is the most complete of all three versions. It is the Russian text that has been used in translating into English this selection, which presents a range of Philokalia writings concerning the Jesus Prayer.

Alexander Ryrie has written an utterly simple, yet eminently practical introduction to the process and eperience of silent prayer, a way of praying that helps us be more in touch with our inner selves and God within. Drawing especially from the Orthodox tradition of the Christian East, and sharing his own experiences, he describes aspects of the process so that those who already engage in silent prayer may enter more fully into it, while invinting newcomers who have not approached prayer in this way. Although he divides the book into chapters, the author emphasizes that silent prayer cannot be broken down into different stages or steps that follow one another. To that end he first describes the different kinds of silence, then offers practical methods of practicing silent prayer, the importance of entering ourselves and encountering God, which are reciprocal and inseparable aspects of the same activity. He points out, finally the practical aspects of silent prayer for our lives. Each chapter is followed by short quotations from Orthodox writers that illustrate points made in the chapters.

Central to the Christian life is the practice of prayer. But what, theologically speaking, is going on when we pray? What does prayer have to do with religious belief and action? Does prayer make a difference? Prayer: A Guide for the Perplexed addresses these and other key questions regarding the Christian theology of prayer. Beginning with Evagrius of Ponticus's 'On Prayer', Ashley Cocksworth finds in this early document a profound expression of the 'integrity' of the experience of prayer and theological thought. Seeking throughout to integrate systematic theology and the spirituality of prayer, individual chapters explore the meaning of some of the core doctrines of lived Christian faith – the Trinity, creation, providence, and the Christian life – as they relate to the practice of prayer. Complete with an annotated bibliography of sources on prayer to promote further reading, this volume appeals to academics and general readers alike.
