Excerpt from The Burlington Magazine for Connoisseurs, Vol. 35: Illustrated and Published Monthly; July-December, 1919 To the rich Florentines of the quattrocento, a little impatient as the rich always are of art that makes much claim on the spectator, Lippi's pure sensibility brought a sense of relief, and he became the darling of the great as no other Florentine painter did. He was the inventor almost of charm in art, of that charm which owers later on almost too splendidly in Leonardo. It is a dangerous element to introduce into art how much does it not account for in the failure of Greek sculpture to keep any grip on plastic ex pression - and Lippi's pupil, Botticelli, narrowly missed, with his exaggerated sensibility, becoming its victim. But there was in him a clear enough intelligence just to keep him from relapsing, and Botticelli, himself, never quite became a Botti cellian. It was his pupils and imitators who found in his work the possibility of that peculiar languid elegance, which has made the popularity of Botticelli's modern reputation. How nearly he gave colour to such a caricature one may see by Mr. Heseltine's Madonna in so far as we can ascribe it to him entirely, and not as is perhaps more exact to his atelier working on a design of the master. Much further from the actual handiwork of Botticelli is the delightfully arranged ballet scene of the Wedding Feast of Nostagio degli Onesti. Here one can take as Botticelli's only the general disposition and the delightful decorative efiect of the architecture on the sky. Excerpt from The Burlington Magazine for Connoisseurs, Vol. 12: Illustrated and Published Monthly; October 1907 to March 1908 It was not till the beginning of the last century that realism began to gain ground appreciably. Garrick encouraged Loutherbourg, but he con fined the ingenious artist's 'real' waterfalls and so forth to his pantomimes. Even in costume nothing more than symbolism was aimed at. The symbolism which Mr. Max Beerbohm has pointed out beneath the grey whiskers of the doctor and the red whiskers of the Irishman had its subtler forerunner in the eighteenth century. The pictures in Bell's British Theatre (1776-1778) are an easily consulted source of information. Miss Yonge as Creusa, queen of Thebes, wears the dress which she would have worn at home, or at a rout but her crown, her tiger or leopard skin, and the key pattern that borders her many skirts, proclaim her at a glance an Eastern queen, and a Greek queen. When we come to John Philip Kemble, we find that stout champion of tradition protesting to some one who wished him to give his Roman soldiers Roman helmets that he was an actor, not an antiquary. Then came the Charles Kean revivals of Shakespeare, Fechter, the Ban crofts, whose realism was a just and artistic revolt against the shabby makeshifts of their day, and Sir Henry Irving, who brought all the newly awakened South Kensington and the still slumber ing Burlington House to his aid, with Sir Alma Tadema at the head of them. The rest of the story is a tale of constantly increasing efforts to make each production a sort of child's guide to the period, and to have as much detail, and as highly elaborated, as possible. The second difficulty of the producer, illustrated again by the production we referred to first, is that of the lighting, which, of course, is closely involved with that of the demand for realism. Excerpt from The Burlington Magazine for Connoisseurs, Vol. 23: April to September, 1913 The colour, though now much faded, has been lovely and also varied, but there seems to be little attempt at shading. Some of the foliage, which is filled in with lines of stitching following the direction of the outline, has each separate line of a different tint. This treatment, which seems to be more a variation of colour than of tone, adds great refinement to this detail. The hair is often striped in two distinct colours, and the letters, which have no distinctive colour outline, are either of pale plum or of dark myrtle green, employed more or less at random, for a name is sometimes composed of a few letters of each tint. Decorative effect and surrounding colour would decide such detail. The couching thread which ties down the gold is of an Indian red, and, judging by the under-side, it has not faded much. Excerpt from The Burlington Magazine for Connoisseurs, Vol. 7: April to September, 1905 That these were not white, 'kept down' in the painting to enhance the value of the esh tones, may be seen from the fact that the highest light on the golilla and ends is far below that on the presumably white paper held in Philip's right hand. Excerpt from The Burlington Magazine for Connoisseurs, Vol. 36: Illustrated and Published Monthly; No. CCII-CCVII; January-June, 1920 Chauvigny possessed in addition to the church, five feudal castles, and to-day S. Pierre towers above a strangely rugged mass of ruins. It is not surprising that this small town has possessed so many monuments, for the Chauvigny pro montory commands the outlet of the steep and sinuous valley of the Poutreau, a short rapid torrent (now harnessed to work at least five mills), which ows from the Fontaine de Talbat, a source collecting the numberless underground springs possessed by the rocky lime-stone pla teau of Lignes; moreover Chauvigny itself possesses quarries of fine white stone for build ing purposes. Jahrhundert.
