The Burlington Magazine has maintained a high, international reputation for publishing authoritative writing on all aspects of art history since its foundation in 1903 by a group of distinguished scholars headed by Roger Fry, Bernard Berenson, and Herbert Horne. Now, in celebration of its centenary, an eminent art historian has compiled this selection of some of the most significant articles, reviews, editorials, and obituaries to appear in it during the twentieth century. The resulting anthology has its surprises and is both entertaining and informative.

Excerpt from The Burlington Magazine for Connoisseurs, Vol. 23: April to September, 1913 The colour, though now much faded, has been lovely and also varied, but there seems to be little attempt at shading. Some of the foliage, which is filled in with lines of stitching following the direction of the outline, has each separate line of a different tint. This treatment, which seems to be more a variation of colour than of tone, adds great refinement to this detail. The hair is often striped in two distinct colours, and the letters, which have no distinctive colour outline, are either of pale plum or of dark myrtle green, employed more or less at random, for a name is sometimes composed of a few letters of each tint. Decorative effect and surrounding colour would decide such detail. The couching thread which ties down the gold is of an Indian red, and, judging by the under-side, it has not faded much. Excerpt from The Burlington Magazine for Connoisseurs, Vol. 2: Illustrated and Published Monthly; June to August, 1903 To be in the hands of dealers. The policy of including objects belonging to dealers has been adversely criticized by friends who have the interests of the Magazine at heart; we therefore think it well to refer again to the matter, although the purpose of our decision was, as it seems to us, clearly enough stated in the April number. Suggestions have, it seems, been made in certain quarters that some corrupt or at least commercial arrange.
