Marie de France (fl. late twelfth century) is the earliest known French woman poet and her lais - stories in verse based on Breton tales of chivalry and romance - are among the finest of the genre. Recounting the trials and tribulations of lovers, the lais inhabit a powerfully realized world where very real human protagonists act out their lives against fairy-tale elements of magical beings, potions and beasts. De France takes a subtle and complex view of courtly love, whether telling the story of the knight who betrays his fairy mistress or describing the noblewoman who embroiders her sad tale on the shroud for a nightingale killed by a jealous and suspicious husband.

Dalam novel Brave New World, Aldous Huxley memperkenalkan sebuah dunia baru: dunia kita, beberapa abad di masa depan. [Mizan, Bentang Pustaka, Hidup, Dunia, Tuhan, Bumi, Indonesia]

This new edition of one of Chaucer's most popular Canterbury Tales will enable the modern reader to participate fully in the imaginative experience it has to offer. Lexical notes are provided at the foot of each page of text to help those approaching Chaucer for the first time to read his poetry as it is intended to be read. The Introduction sets that poetry in its historical context, and suggests the kind of imaginative adjustment that today's reader of medieval literature needs to make in any critical response to it. Laying the emphasis on medieval rather than modern conceptions of unity, character and style, the editor suggests that the organising principles of the tale are to be found in the pattern of moral and philosophical ideas that are contained within it. The general issues considered in the Introduction are developed in greater detail in the Commentary that follows the text. A Select Bibliography concludes the book.

The Book of the Duchess is the earliest of Chaucer's major poems, preceded only by his short poem, "An ABC," and possibly by his translation of The Romaunt of the Rose. Most sources put the date of composition after 12 September 1368 (when Blanche of Lancaster died) and 1372, with many recent studies privileging a date as early as the end of 1368. Overwhelming (if disputed) evidence suggests that Chaucer wrote the poem to commemorate the death of Blanche of Lancaster, wife of John of Gaunt. The evidence includes handwritten notes from Elizabethan antiquary John Stowe indicating that the poem was written at John of Gaunt's request. There are repeated instances of the word "White," which is almost certainly a play on "Blanche." In addition, at the end of the poem there are references to a 'long castel', suggesting the house of Lancaster (line 1318) and a 'ryche hil' as John of Gaunt was earl of Richmond (mond=hill) (line 1319) and the narrator swears by St John, which is John of Gaunt's saint's name.
