MANKIND'S GREATEST DREAM: THE CONQUEST OF DEATH IS FINALLY REALIZED... BUT IT COMES WITH A CATCH. In the near future, medical science discovers the secret to achieving immortality and eternal youth. But in order to preserve everyone's youthful vitality they must undergo an operation before passing into adulthood that locks their body in the form of a pre-adolescent eleven year old. Under the auspices of the United Nations Global Longevity Initiative led by brilliant neurosurgeon Dr. Richard Ross, the program promises a peaceful utopian society where emotionally and intellectually mature juveniles rule the world. But not everyone is happy with the new arrangement. A small but passionate group of rebels from the Garden of Eden church, led by the mercurial Calvin James, plots to overthrow the new regime and return the world to its natural order. Starting with a shocking revelation at the end of the first chapter, the idyllic setting is quickly overturned through a series of sinister schemes and escalating medical complications, where suddenly the world finds itself on the brink of imminent extinction. Building to an exciting climax, Dr. Ross and his endocrinologist girlfriend must save the one remaining adult female queen, whose mature eggs represent the final link to the continuity of the human race. In an age of globalization characterized by the dizzying technologies of the First World, and the social disintegration of the Third, is the concept of utopia still meaningful? Archaeologies of the Future, Jameson's most substantial work since Postmodernism, Or, the Cultural Logic of Late Capitalism, investigates the development of this form since Thomas More, and interrogates the functions of utopian thinking in a post-Communist age. The relationship between utopia and science fiction is explored through the representations of othernessalien life and alien worldsand a study of the works of Philip K. Dick, Ursula LeGuin, William Gibson, Brian Aldiss, Kim Stanley Robinson and more. Jameson's essential essays, including "The Desire Called Utopia," conclude with an examination of the opposing positions on utopia and an assessment of its political value today.Archaeologies of the Future is the third volume, after Postmodernism and A Singular Modernity, of Jameson's project on the Poetics of Social Forms.

The Middle Included is a systematic exploration of the meanings of logos throughout Aristotle's work. It claims that the basic meaning is "gathering," in the sense of a relation that holds its terms together without isolating them or collapsing one to the other. This basic meaning applies to logos in the sense of human language as well. Aristotle describes how some animals are capable of understanding non-firsthand experience without being able to relay it, while others relay it without understanding its content. Aygün argues that what distinguishes human language, for Aristotle, is its ability to both understand and relay non-firsthand experiences along with firsthand ones. This ability is key to understanding the human condition: science, history, news media, education, propaganda, gossip, utopian fiction, and sophistry, as well as philosophy. Aristotle's name for this peculiar but crucial human ability of "gathering" firsthand experience with non-firsthand experience, Ömer Aygün finds, is logos, and this leads to a claim about the specificity of human rationality and language.

In this prescient thriller about an all-too-possible scenario, a man fights to keep his family alive when a cyberworld meltdown and fierce storms cut New York City off from the world. Mike Mitchell is an average New Yorker living in an apartment in Chelsea, struggling to keep his family together. When the Internet goes down, he suddenly finds himself fighting just to keep them alive. The electricity and power supplies fade in and out, and the explanations offered by the authorities are vague and untrustworthy. A string of increasingly bizarre disasters starts appearing on the world’s news networks, and a monster snowstorm hits New York City before Christmas. Mike and his close friends and family hunker down in their apartment building for safety, organizing and rationing food and water. Outside, the boundaries between lawful and criminal behaviour break down as resources become scarce. With the threat to their safety growing, Mike and his family pin their hopes on fleeing the city for the countryside. But as the world and cyberworld come crashing down, New York is suddenly cut off, turning the city into a wintry tomb where nothing is what it seems, and where no one can be trusted . . .

"Once thought to be pure academic legend, scientists recently found proof of the existence of viruses thousands of times larger than ordinary viruses. So far all have been innocuous, but what if one was a human pathogen? While drilling for oil in the desolate reaches of the Arctic, an unsuspecting company extracts a permafrost ice core that has been frozen for 30,000 years, accidentally releasing 'megavirus.' Top investigator Sarah Spallanzani and her team must race against the ticking clock of the short Arctic summer to discover a way to protect workers from the virus before competitors drain the basin of its rich resources, and before anyone else succumbs to the deadly fever of the Laptev virus."--Back cover.
