In addition to being one of the world's leading interpreters of the Old Testament, Walter Brueggemann is a skilled and beloved preacher. This collection of sermons demonstrates Brueggemann's fidelity to biblical texts, which come alive with meaning in our contemporary world. Throughout, Brueggemann reflects on his preaching. As Samuel Wells writes in his foreword, "Enjoy this volume from a master exegete, a master theologian, and a master preacher. They really are neat sermons. And they're for you."

This set of seven sermons follows the traditional church sequence of “The Seven Last Words of the Cross,” utterances that the gospel narratives place on the lips of Jesus. These utterances are drawn from the several gospel narratives. In the liturgical life of the church, however, the sequence has a significance and staying power of its own quite apart from the gospel narratives in which the utterances are embedded. These sermons take seriously the faith voiced by Jesus in his context of wretched abuse by the Roman Empire. They attempt, moreover, to connect that reality of faith and abuse in our contemporary world of concentrated, ruthless power. The intent of such sermons on Good Friday is to replicate for us in our context what such an interface of faith and abuse must have been like.

Abraham, the father of all believers, plays host to three strangers, one of whom is God, and thus sets an example for others to follow. Jews, Christians, and Muslims often treat each other as strangers. Their Holy Books are not the cause of their conflicts and enmity but rather show the way to solve them. They tell a common story of the lifelong journey of the human being to the promised city, the promised land, and the promised world where justice and righteousness reign.

Taking his point of departure from the newest frontier of research, McCann reads the psalms in the context of their final shape and canonical form. He interprets the psalms as scripture as well as in their character as songs, prayers, and poetry from Israel's history. McCann's intent is to contribute to the church's recovery of the psalms as torah--as instruction, as a guide to prayer, praise of God, and pious living. The explicit connections which McCann draws from the psalms to the New Testament and to Christian faith and life are extensive, making his work suitable for serious study of the psalms in academic and in church settings. An appendix examines the tradition of singing the psalms and offers suggestions for the use of the psalms in worship.

With this new lectionary commentary series, Westminster John Knox offers the most extensive resource for preaching on the market today. When complete, the twelve volumes of the series will cover all the Sundays in the three-year lectionary cycle, along with movable occasions, such as Christmas Day, Epiphany, Holy Week, and All Saints' Day. For each lectionary text, preachers will find four brief essays--one each on the theological, pastoral, exegetical, and homiletical challenges of the text. This gives preachers sixteen different approaches to the proclaimation of the Word on any given occasion. The editors and contributors to this series are world-class scholars, pastors, and writers representing a variety of denominations and traditions. And while the twelve volumes of the series will follow the pattern of the Revised Common Lectionary, each volume will contain an index of biblical passages so that nonlectionary preachers, as well as teachers and students, may make use of its contents.

To Liberate and Redeem provides an alternative to Stanley Hauerwas's claims about the range of options in Christian ethics today. Long is at least equally attentive to the details of the biblical narrative, and his reflections are supportive of the liberal Protestant tradition. The liberationist perspectives that have either been ignored or dismissed out of hand are here also given a critical but respectful hearing. Emphatically liberal, humane, responsible, and readable. -- Dennis P. McCann, Professor of Religious Studies, DePaul University, ChicagoReading the Bible is a complex and difficult undertaking, says author and senior scholar Edward LeRoy Long in the early pages of this thoughtfully written treatment of an important and timely topic. To Liberate and Redeem probes how present-day moral decisions can be informed by studying the biblical story of persons and groups who wrestled with similar concerns while standing in faithful responsiveness to God. The biblical materials, Long writes, contain many of the same diversities that need to characterize moral reflection as an invitation to be faithful rather than as a demand to be correct. This unfolding drama is characterized by persons or groups who need liberation because they are trapped in oppressive structures and by those once freed who need to faithfully construct communities of redemption. Long takes account of the full biblical narrative -- beginning with the oppression of slavery and the Exodus liberation, in order to look back to the Creation and forward to Christ, Paul, and the early church.
