Neben einem kurzen Lebenslauf soll der Schwerpunkt dieser Arbeit auf der unmittelbaren Rolle des WERNERIUS im Investiturstreit gelegt werden. Ein Hauptaugenmerk wird dabei der Fragestellung gewidmet sein, in wie weit man heute noch in Bezug auf die Entstehung der Universität Bologna zwischen Mythos und Wirklichkeit des WERNERIUS unterscheiden kann. Im Speziellen soll dabei ein grundsätzlicher Blick auf die Aussagekraft der überlieferten Quellen geworfen werden, indem auch der Frage nachgegangen werden soll, ob und wie weit die vertieften Kenntnisse der justinianischen Kodifikation des antiken römischen Rechts des WERNERIUS erst für die Gräfin MATHILDE und dann später auch für den Kaiser HEINRICH V. im Investiturstreit von Bedeutung waren und welche Nachwirkung damit erzielt wurde. Als wissenschaftliche Grundlagen zur Klärung dieser Fragen dienen unter anderem die mit WERNERIUS in Verbindung stehenden überlieferten Urkunden aus dem Werk „Wernerius Bononiensis Iudex. La figura storica d ́Irnerio“ des Autors Enrico SPAGNESI sowie „Die Chronik des Propstes Burchard von Ursberg“ die von Oswald HOLDER EGGER und Bernhard VON SIMSON editiert wurde. Neben Aufsätzen wie „... auf Bitten der Gräfin Mathilde". Werner von Bologna und Irnerius“ von Johannes FRIED und „Irnerius als Rechtsberater der Mathilde. Seine Rolle und seine Bedeutung im Investiturstreit“ von Wulf Eckart VOSS wird auch Sekundärliteratur, wie die Monographie Hermann LANGEs „Römisches Recht im Mittelalter. Die Glossatoren“ hierfür herangezogen, um auch die Untersuchungen anderer Fachleute sowie den Forschungsstand mit einzubeziehen.
