Following the style of The Physics Companion and The Electronics Companion, this book is a revision aid and study guide for undergraduate students in physics and engineering. It consists of a series of one-page-per-topic descriptions of the key concepts covered in a typical first-year "mathematics for physics" course. The emphasis is placed on relating the mathematical principles being introduced to real-life physical problems. In common with the other companions, there is strong use of figures throughout to help in understanding of the concepts under consideration. The book will be an essential reference and revision guide, particularly for those students who do not have a strong background in mathematics when beginning their degree.

Get Your Copies of A.C. Fischer-Cripps’ Updated Companions This highly successful series of books was originally launched in 2003 with the publication of the innovative Physics Companion. Each core topic in the physics curriculum was covered, deriving key concepts and equations in clear, one-page, figure-rich descriptions. Each subsection contained a summary of the main equations, together with a set of worked examples. This unique design quickly established The Physics Companion as an essential resource for undergraduate students throughout the course of their degree, acting both as study guide and revision aid. The Electronics Companion, The Mathematics Companion, The Materials Physics Companion, and The Chemistry Companion followed soon after, publishing in 2004, 2005, 2007, and 2011 respectively. Taking the same signature approach as The Physics Companion, these books used clear writing and a visual presentation to make the material suitable for students in any country, including those with English as a second language. Fischer-Cripps has now extended the coverage of The Physics Companion, The Electronics Companion, The Mathematics Companion, and The Materials Physics Companion and updated them where necessary, building on the outstanding success of the first editions. "This is teaching at its best!" --Hans Camenzind, inventor of the 555 timer (the world's most successful integrated circuit), and author of Much Ado About Almost Nothing: Man's Encounter with the Electron (Booklocker.com) "A fabulous book: well written, well paced, fun, and informative. I also love the sense of humor. It's very good at disarming the fear. And it's gorgeous. I'll be recommending this book highly." --Tom Igoe, author of Physical Computing and Making Things Talk A "magnificent and rewarding book. ... Every step of this structured instruction is expertly illustrated with photos and crisp diagrams. . . . This really is the best way to learn." --Kevin Kelly, in Cool Tools The first edition of Make: Electronics established a new benchmark for introductory texts. This second edition enhances that learning experience. Here you will find unique, photographically precise diagrams of breadboarded components, to help you build circuits with speed and precision. A new shopping guide and a simplified range of components, will minimize your investment in parts for the projects. A completely new section on the Arduino shows you how to write properly structured programs instead of just downloading other people's code. Projects have been reworked to provide additional features, and the book has been restructured to offer a step-by-step learning process that is as clear and visually pleasing on handheld devices as it is on paper. Full color is used throughout. As before, Make: Electronics begins with the basics. You'll see for yourself how components work--and what happens when they don't. You'll short out a battery and overheat an LED. You'll also open up a potentiometer and a relay to see what's inside. No other book gives you such an opportunity to learn from real-life experiences. Ultimately, you will build gadgets that have lasting value, and you'll have a complete understanding of how they work. From capacitors to transistors to microcontrollers--it's all here. Hans Camenzind, inventor of the 555 Timer (the world's most successful integrated circuit chip), said that "This is teaching at its best!" when he reviewed the first edition. Now the second edition offers even more!

The topic of bipolar compatible CMOS (BiCMOS) is a fascinating one and of ever-growing practical importance. The "technology pendulum" has swung from the two extremes of preeminence of bipolar in the 1950s and 60s to the apparent endless horizons for VLSI NMOS technology during the 1970s and 80s. Yet starting in the 1980s severallimits were clouding the horizon for pure NMOS technology. CMOS reemerged as a· viable high density, high performance technology. Similarly by the mid 1980s scaled bipolar devices had not only demonstrated new high speed records, but early versions of mixed bipolar/CMOS technology were being produced. Hence the paradigm of either high density . Q[ high speed was metamorphasizing into an opportunity for both speed and density via a BiCMOS approach. Now as we approach the 1990s there have been a number of practical demonstrations of BiCMOS both for memory and logic applications and I expect the trend to escalate over the next decade. This book makes a timely contribution to the field of BiCMOS technology and circuit development. The evolution is now indeed rapid so that it is difficult to make such a book exhaustive of current developments. Probably equally difficult is the fact that the new technology opens a range of novel circuit opportunities that are as yet only formative in their development. Given these obstacles it is a herculean task to try to assemble a book on BiCMOS.

A detailed, modern introduction to semiconductors made in silicon and III-V compounds. This book develops the device physics of pn junctions, bipolar transistors, Schottky barriers, MOS capacitors, and MOS field-effect transistors (MOSFETs). Basic concepts from quantum and statistical mechanics are used to describe electrons and holes in semiconductors. Figures and examples based on realistic device parameters are used to illustrate important concepts. The book uses spice tools to analyze complex devices. Design specifications are stressed in building or modeling complicated semiconductor devices.
