The aim of this book is to provide the reader with a guide to Hawking radiation through a dual approach to the problem. After an introductory chapter containing some basic knowledge about black holes and quantum field theory in curved spacetime, the first part of the book consists in a survey of methods for deriving and studying Hawking radiation from astrophysical black holes, from the original calculation by S W Hawking to the most recent contributions involving tunneling and gravitational anomalies. In the second part, we introduce analogue gravity, and we focus our attention to dielectric black hole systems, to which the studies of the present authors are devoted. The mutual interchange of knowledge between the aforementioned parts is addressed to render a more comprehensive picture of this very fascinating quantum phenomenon associated with black holes.

This volume contains the proceedings of the Sixth International Conference on Complex Analysis and Dynamical Systems, held from May 19-24, 2013, in Nahariya, Israel, in honor of David Shoikhet's sixtieth birthday. The papers in this volume range over a wide variety of topics in Partial Differential Equations, Differential Geometry, and the Radon Transform. Taken together, the articles collected here provide the reader with a panorama of activity in partial differential equations and general relativity, drawn by a number of leading figures in the field. They testify to the continued vitality of the interplay between classical and modern analysis. The companion volume (Contemporary Mathematics, Volume 667) is devoted to complex analysis, quasiconformal mappings, and complex dynamics. This book is co-published with Bar-Ilan University (Ramat-Gan, Israel).

Do you know the basics of general relativity? Do you want to know something of what more there is? Do you wonder how the theory of relativity came into being? Then this book is for you! Partial contents: - Black holes and gravitational collapse - Cosmological solutions of Einstein's field equations - Gravitational waves - Space-time singularities - The problem of motion for massive particles - A collection of exact solutions of Einstein's field equations - A history of Einstein's creation of the theory of relativity in the years 1905-1915 - A short course for repetition of the basics of general relativity - Bibliography, references, and index The book, although not very advanced, covers a number of topics not often seen in text books. The selection, of course, refelects my own interests. The different chapters may to a large extent, though not completely, be read in any desired order. The author has a PhD in theoretical physics and is lecturer of mathematics. He has for many years taught physics and mathematics at senior high school as well as university level.

The serenity of a clear night sky belies the evidence—gathered by balloons, rockets, satellites, and telescopes—that the universe contains centers of furious activity that pour out vast amounts of energy, some in regular cycles and some in gigantic bursts. This reader-friendly book, acclaimed by Nature as "excellent and uncompromising," traces the development of modern astrophysics and its explanations of these startling celestial fireworks. This lively narrative ranges from the gravitational theories of Newton and Einstein to recent exciting discoveries of such violent phenomena as supernovae, pulsars, X-ray sources, active galaxies, radio sources, and quasars. An in-depth exploration of the Big Bang covers both conventional theory and subsequent issues that cast doubt upon its explanation of the birth of the universe. Several appendixes offer supplements to the text's main topics, and a helpful glossary and tables of references appear at the end.
