In this extraordinary memoir, one of the best young writers in America today transforms into a work of art the darkest passage imaginable in a young woman's life: an obsessive love affair between father and daughter that began when Kathryn Harrison, twenty years old, was reunited with a parent whose absence had haunted her youth. Exquisitely and hypnotically written, like a bold and terrifying dream, The Kiss is breathtaking in its honesty and in the power and beauty of its creation. A story both of taboo and of family complicity in breaking taboo, The Kiss is also about love -- about the most primal of love triangles, the one that ensnares a child between mother and father. From the Hardcover edition.

Writers have previously placed the action of kissing into categories: kisses of love, affection, peace, respect and friendship. Each of the essays in this fascinating book takes a single kind of kiss and uses it as an index to the past. For rather than offering a simple history of the kiss, this book is about the kiss in history. In this collection, an eminent group of cultural historians explore the kiss through sources as diverse as religious texts, popular prints, court depositions, periodicals, diaries and poetry. This collection shows that by analyzing the kiss and its position--embedded as it is as part of our culture--history can use small gestures to take us to big issues concerning ourselves and others, the past and the present.

This book is a tribute to two precious people I called Mom and Dad by conveying their life story. The book takes excerpt from Mother and Dad's diaries so they are obliquely able to convey their story. Part of what of the story concerns Mother's self-portrayal detailing experiences from birth until her young husband was leaving to fight in World War II. It depicts Mom's tender, loving attributes, which those that knew her had the privilege of experiencing. I honestly do not think she realized possessing such wonderful attributes, which made them all the more enjoyable for those of us who crossed her path on the road of life. Another portion is by Dad depicting his World War II story. Then I fill in by describing what occurred as seen through my eyes, which emerged from a lifetime of inspiration they produced by existing together authentically.
