Mice have long been recognized as a valuable tool for investigating the genetic and physiological bases of human diseases such as diabetes, infectious disease, cancer, heart disease, and a wide array of neurological disorders. With the advent of transgenic and other genetic engineering technologies, the versatility and usefulness of the mouse as a model in biomedical research has soared. As a result, mouse colonies everywhere are expanding, and scientists who previously focused on other models are turning their attention to the mouse. Revised to reflect advances since the first edition, The Laboratory Mouse, Second Edition continues to be the most accessible reference on the biology and care of the laboratory mouse. This guide presents basic information and common procedures in detail to provide a quick reference source for investigators, technicians, and caretakers in the humane care and use of the mouse in the laboratory setting. Expanded, updated, and now in color, this new edition includes coverage of the biological features, husbandry, management, veterinary care, experimental methodology, and resources applying specifically to the mouse.

Rats have long been recognized as a valuable biomedical research model, notably in the investigation of aging, toxicology, addiction, and common human diseases such as diabetes and hypertension. In many instances, individuals conducting such research studies are charged with important responsibilities, including animal facility management, animal husbandry, veterinary care, regulatory compliance, and various experimental methodologies. With the advent of genetic manipulations and biomedical research technological advances such as bioimaging, the versatility and usefulness of the rat as an animal model has soared. The Laboratory Rat, Second Edition captures the multiple advances in this important animal model’s husbandry, veterinary care, and experimental methodology. This edition features augmented, expanded, and novel information on biology, anesthesia, analgesia, and experimental techniques benefiting personnel working with rats—from the animal care staff to the researcher and everyone in between. The book is also extremely useful to institutional animal care and use program supporters and elements, including animal care and use committees, institutional officials, occupational health and safety professionals, veterinary technicians, and veterinarians.

Mice have been domesticated by humans for centuries, even millennia, and have been used in research since the 1600's. However, development of the laboratory mouse as a research model accelerated with genetic experiments in the early 1900's. Today, the laboratory mouse is recognized as the pre-eminent model for modern genetic research. In fact, over the last decade or so, most biomedical research facilities have experienced increases of up to three hundred percent in their mouse populations. Numerous other disciplines, including immunology, cancer biology, toxicology, developmental biology, aging research, and cardiovascular biology have recognized the mouse as a valuable research model. The Laboratory Mouse provides a single source reference for investigators, technicians, and animal caretakers charged with the care and/or use of mice in biomedical research. The book is particularly valuable to researchers at small institutions and to those who work at facilities that lack large, well-organized animal resource units.

For critical care of laboratory rodents, there is a scarcity of sources for comprehensive, feasible, and response-oriented information on clinical interventions specific to spontaneous and induced models of disease. With the more complex cases that need critical care management, many treatment approaches to veterinary emergencies cannot be applied directly to the laboratory rodent. The first text of its kind devoted to the challenges of critical care management for laboratory rodents, Critical Care Management for Laboratory Mice and Rats provides a specialized resource for all veterinary, husbandry, technical, and research professionals who utilize rodent models for biomedical research. The book covers the varied approaches to laboratory rodent patient care, health assessments, characteristics of specific disease models, monitoring and scoring of disease parameters, and humane interventions. Giving primary consideration to preservation of animal health and welfare, the text also considers how best to balance welfare with the achievement of proposed scientific objectives. Organized into five chapters, this full-color book covers the following topics: General Approaches for Critical Care Critical Care Management for Laboratory Mice Critical Care Management for Laboratory Rats Special Considerations for Critical Care Management in Laboratory Rodents Resources and Additional Information The author provides treatment guidelines with the expectation that they will be applied with apt professional judgment, allowing for further modification of clinical recommendations for improved patient-based care and welfare for research animals.

Since the popular first edition was published more than a decade ago, the number of swine used in toxicity studies has increased as an alternative to commonly used non-rodent species, such as dogs and primates. A volume in the Laboratory Animal Pocket Reference Series, The Laboratory Swine, Second Edition maintains the high standard set by the previous edition and is poised to continue its legacy as the premier laboratory reference on the care and use of swine in the laboratory. Emphasizes Humane Care and Use of Laboratory Swine Addressing the biology, husbandry, management, veterinary care and research applications of both large and miniature swine, this color reference is a complete source of information on the species. It is thoroughly updated and includes a major revision to the anesthetics section. It also places a heightened focus on animal welfare and addresses important considerations related to genetically modified swine. The book is divided into six parts: Important Biological Features examines everything from different breeds and behavior, to anatomical and physiological features, as well as digestive, cardiovascular, and pulmonary systems Husbandry addresses housing, nutrition, sanitation, transportation, and more Management and Quality Assurance looks at the impact of infections on animal research using swine, zoonotic diseases, legal regulations, genetic monitoring, and more Veterinary Care covers a variety of topics, such as clinical examination, diseases, pain recognition, and post-operative management Experimental Techniques addresses restraint, sampling techniques, basic surgical procedures, and other issues Resources provides extensive references for further study, including handbooks, journals, and websites The Laboratory Swine, Second Edition is ideal for animal caretakers, technicians, investigators, and laboratory animal veterinarians as a single-source reference that contributes to the humane care and use of swine in research.

Although much is known about the parasites of laboratory animals, information is often lacking and what is available is scattered. It is the purpose of this book to gather what is known in this field so that it is readily accessible to those who need it, and to point out what is not known. The parasites described are those that occur spontaneously. Experimentally induced conditions are mentioned only if they are of special significance. No attempt is made to include the parasites of all domestic and wild animals. As a general rule, those of the common laboratory animals are all included, but for the less common species, only the commonest parasites of the animal species most likely to be used in the laboratory are described. Agents that occur only in domestic animals of agricultural importance are not described, even though these animals are sometimes used in the laboratory, as this information is readily available elsewhere.
