Once the world was under the authority of a single ruling entity, and a powerful and charismatic leader was elected to be its executive, it was certain that things would change. Unfortunately for humanity, the transformation was not for the better. When the Global Governance Group (GGG) announced its order that no subordinate governing body, company, trade union, organization, or individual could buy or sell without a government issued biochit, it was just another concession for many. For one man however, the implications became all too obvious, and he hatched a plan for the survival of his family and his friends. This narrative is an apocalyptic vision of the future that has at its core the hypothetical question: Could a man take the mark of the beast and still be saved?

This textbook features the best of traditional methods for learning ancient Greek, with an especially strong focus on composition work. But the text also includes innovative drills and stimulating readings and sentences, designed to provide a gateway to discussions about Greek literature, history, and culture. The text presupposes the mastery of no other foreign language, including Latin, and thus fully explicates the most basic principles of tense, part of speech, etc. Particularly difficult aspects of the Greek language, like accentuation or the principles of euphonic change, are introduced gradually yet fully. The relative frequency of forms, vocabulary, and constructions in Greek literature informs the organization and order of the text. With the completion of the companion text, A Course in Attic Greek II, the student will be prepared to read any ancient author in the original, including works in Koine Greek.

Some of the loveliest works of Archaic art were the Athenian korai—sculptures of beautiful young women presenting offerings to the goddess Athena that stood on the Acropolis. Sculpted in the sixth and early fifth centuries B.C., they served as votives until Persians sacked the citadel in 480/79 B.C. Subsequently, they were buried as a group and forgotten for nearly twenty-four centuries, until archaeologists excavated them in the 1880s. Today, they are among the treasures of the Acropolis Museum. Mary Stieber takes a fresh look at the Attic korai in this book. Challenging the longstanding view that the sculptures are generic female images, she persuasively argues that they are instead highly individualized, mimetically realistic representations of Archaic young women, perhaps even portraits of real people. Marshalling a wide array of visual and literary evidence to support her claims, she shows that while the korai lack the naturalism that characterizes later Classical art, they display a wealth and realism of detail that makes it impossible to view them as generic, idealized images. This iconoclastic interpretation of the Attic korai adds a new dimension to our understanding of Archaic art and to the distinction between realism and naturalism in the art of all periods.

An age-old prophecy of global devastation is about to be fulfilled. Hunted since childhood over his preternatural powers, Orano Tulay hides behind a surly attitude and antisocial demeanor. He joined the Omega Group to protect mankind, but the latest threat involves claims of witchcraft that sound outlandish even to a man like him. Forces of magic are being used to manipulate forces of nature, exploiting humankind’s greatest weakness and unleashing chaos. Face-to-face with a three-hundred-year-old coven of witches led by a power-hungry high priestess, Orano must expose himself to risk like never before. As if that isn’t bad enough, he discovers one of the coven members is his first love—the girl he left behind more than a decade ago. Orano must prevent the high priestess from succeeding in her quest for world domination, but first he’ll need to keep his own demons at bay.
