Gabriel and Michael Corrigan are two young men living just beneath the glittering surface of life in Los Angeles. Since childhood, the brothers have been shaped by stories that their father was a Traveler — one of an elite group of prophets able to attain pure enlightenment. The Corrigans, who may have inherited their father’s gifts, have always lived “off the grid” — that is, invisible to the intricate surveillance networks that monitor people in our modern world. Thousands of miles away, Maya is attempting to lead a normal life in London. The attractive twenty-six-year-old designer wants to ignore the fact that she comes from a long lineage of Harlequins — a band of warriors pledged to protect the Travelers at all costs. When Maya is summoned to Prague by her ailing father, she learns that Gabriel and Michael have just been located in California. The brothers may represent the last surviving Travelers, and are in desperate need of protection. Maya is reluctant to be drawn into the solitary, destructive life of her ancestors, but she has been trained to fight since she was a young girl. Also searching for the brothers is Nathan Boone, a disciplined mercenary working for the Tabulas — ruthless men who are determined to inflict order on the world by invisibly controlling its population. Boone and the Tabulas fear the power of the Travelers, and for generations Tabulas have hunted them down. When Maya flies to California in search of Gabriel and Michael Corrigan, a colossal battle looms that will reveal a secret history of our time. In this stunningly suspenseful first novel, reminiscent of George Orwell and Philip Pullman, John Twelve Hawks has created a vividly imagined world that runs parallel to our own. Moving at lightning speed from the back alleys of Prague to the underworld of Los Angeles to a guarded research facility in New York, The Traveler goes beneath the surface to give us new insights on history and our own lives. From the Hardcover edition.

In 1945, near the end of World War II, Antal Szerb, the author of "The Traveler," was executed along with 2000 other Hungarian Jews during a forced march westward. Three years later the New York Jewish Refugee Aid Society erected a memorial in the Hungarian town of Balf where the executions had taken place. Part of the memorial is an open book, engraved in stone, bearing the following Antal Szerb quote: ""Freedom is the concern not only of one nation but of all mankind."" In 1995, on the 50th anniversary date of Szerb's execution, Peter Hargitai, "The Traveler's" American translator, and his students at Florida International University had the name of Antal Szerb inscribed into the memorial wall of the Holocaust Memorial in the city of Miami Beach.

A charming fable that evokes a life lesson we would all do well to learn: living and loving are time well spent. Once, there was a boy named Charlie. He had a pretty nice life . . . but it wasn't perfect. So one day he packed up all his time—all his round, squishy years and square, mushy months, down to every itsy-bitsy second—in his suitcase and locked it up safe, said goodbye to his parents, and set off to find something better to spend his time on. Charlie traveled all over the world in search of the perfect thing to make him happy, but that turned out to be much harder to find than he thought. In the meantime, his itsybitsy seconds and silky, smooth hours and raggedy days ticked away and vanished, and soon they added up to weeks and months and years—so that once Charlie stopped his traveling and realized what he really needed out of life, it was almost too late. Almost. Every so often, a book comes along that seems to capture an important truth for a particular time and generation. This is one of those books: a unique story about the relentless search for perfect happiness that preoccupies so many of us. ORIGINS OF THE TRAVELER The Traveler stemmed from something I heard over dinner, the evening before I embarked on a drive from Boston to Los Angeles: "We only have so much time to give." I don't remember the comment's context, but its phrasing struck me. I thought about it literally as I packed for my trip . . . If you can give time, you can keep time—or save time, too; why would anyone do that? And if time is a form of currency, I wonder what it looks like . . . I quickly decided on the story's basic premise: a boy, not content with his life, decides to pack up his time and leave home in search of something perfect to spend it on. The next morning I pushed off from Boston and headed west. Days later, immediately upon my arrival in Los Angeles, I sat down and wrote The Traveler. ILLUSTRATION COLLABORATION In addition to being my older brother, Daniel is a fantastic artist, and I'm so glad he agreed to be the lead on the huge task of illustrating The Traveler. We've figured out a fun and collaborative working arrangement: first, we share our ideas on what sort of illustration we're looking for—we consider the role it will play in plot and thematic development, and, of course, the aesthetic appeal—then we draw up preliminary sketches. Once they're completed, we discuss these crude images and, after selecting the best concepts from each, Daniel takes over. He ties together our rough ideas, meliorates them, adds more of his own, and magically creates an illustration. We critique it together, then Daniel continues to develop and hone the illustration until we're happy with the result.

RN Bethany Morgan's life changes in an instant when the broken and bloodied body of her husband, Marshall, is wheeled past her and into the emergency department trauma bay. As his condition worsens, she struggles with the horrific memories of a monstrous creature that attacked her and killed her brother and sister when she was five years old. Unable to consider life without Marshall, Bethany embarks on a spiritual journey into hell to save his life. When she desperately accepts the help of an angelic being, she is propelled back in time to face the reality of her memories. Who and what they discover in an ancient subterranean cavern forever changes their views on religion and life itself. Thus begins the first book in the series: The Traveler. In the forested rolling hills of Wisconsin lives a creature unlike any other on earth. Thirty-five years ago, it killed six innocent young children who were playing in the cemetery one night. Five-year-old Bethany Carr was the only survivor, and she's locked away the memories of the attack deep inside her fragile mind. Though she is happily married, her daily struggle for normalcy is put to the test when her husband lies fighting for his life in the ICU. As the pieces of her memories burst from Bethany's mind, she prays for guidance and strength from her Bible, but when her husband welcomes death, she seeks help from another realm. Desperate to save her husband's life, Bethany cautiously allows her friend Rose to bring her Ouija board, and they contact the other side. Now, with the portal open, an angelic presence offers help...but for a hefty price. Bethany follows Marshall's soul into Hell to save him, and together, they return to the dead-land of her nightmares to discover the truth of what she can't remember. Bound by honor to repay the angel who helped save Marshall's life, Bethany and Marshall return to Wisconsin to save other children who have been abducted by the creature. The secrets they unravel open their eyes to the hidden conspiracies of this world, and propel them forward to fight the eternal enemy. Melissa Moye has been a registered nurse for 21 years. She works in ICU, and she lives on 10 acres in the beautiful country of North Florida. Armed with an active imagination and a computer, she creates compelling, almost believable stories of ghosts, aliens, and government conspiracies. She lives with her husband of 26 years; together, they enjoy riding their Harleys, exercising, and sitting under the stars at night, looking for UFOs. Melissa's other hobbies include nature photography, yoga, tai chi, and meditation. Melissa can be contacted at [email protected]
