What Is Medicine? Western and Eastern Approaches to Healing is the first comparative history of two millennia of Western and Chinese medicine from their beginnings in the centuries BCE through present advances in sciences like molecular biology and in Western adaptations of traditional Chinese medicine. In his revolutionary interpretation of the basic forces that undergird shifts in medical theory, Paul U. Unschuld relates the history of medicine in both Europe and China to changes in politics, economics, and other contextual factors. Drawing on his own extended research of Chinese primary sources as well as his and others' scholarship in European medical history, Unschuld argues against any claims of "truth" in former and current, Eastern and Western models of physiology and pathology. What Is Medicine? makes an eloquent and timely contribution to discussions on health care policies while illuminating the nature of cognitive dynamics in medicine, and it stimulates fresh debate on the essence and interpretation of reality in medicine's attempts to manage the human organism.

Excerpt from What Is Medicine? A Presidential address is usually gratulatory to the body which has honored the speaker by selecting him to preside over it. In medical conclaves it is also customarily historical. The shades of Hippocrates and Celsus, of Galen and Avicenna, are paraded in their ancient garbs, and twenty centuries are gone over in as many minutes, preluding a summary of the novelties and notorieties of the preceding year, which, in these days of medical periodicals, is an easier matter than it used to be. The special olog'y which each Association flies as its distinguishing pendant determines the objects legitimately within its purview, and the President, for the time, is monarch of the medical, surgical, gynecological, ophthalmological, rhinological, dermatological or whatever other realm, for the two, three, or, at most, four days he may have to rule, without question of his authority, provided he does not encroach upon the domain of any fellow sovereign. But the American Academy of Medicine would have little reason for being at all, and I no occasion for any public utterance, if its place were to be sought among the pathological and clinical, the biological and sanitary associations of a national character, which are numerous enough to include the devotees of each particular department of our great science. It is, however, concerned with none of these parts of the body politic of Medicine, but with the illimitable spirit which animates them all. It trenches on no other's ground, and hence antagonizes none, but, permeating all, seeks to cement them into a compact unity by inculcating principles that should govern all. Fredrik Svenaeus' book is a delight to read. Not only does he exhibit keen understanding of a wide range of topics and figures in both medicine and philosophy, but he manages to bring them together in an innovative manner that convincingly demonstrates how deeply these two significant fields can be and, in the end, must be mutually enlightening. Medicine, Svenaeus suggests, reveals deep but rarely explicit themes whose proper comprehension invites a careful phenomenological and hermeneutical explication. Certain philosophical approaches, on the other hand - specifically, Heidegger's phenomenology and Gadamer's hermeneutics - are shown to have a hitherto unrealized potential for making sense of those themes long buried within Western medicine. Richard M. Zaner, Ann Geddes Stahlman Professor of Medical Ethics, Vanderbilt University
