Both technically and economically, additives form a large and increasingly significant part of the polymer industry, both plastics and elastomers. Since the first edition of this book was published, there have been wide-ranging developments, covering chemistry and formulation of new and more efficient additive systems and the safer use of additives, both by processors in the factory and, in the wider field, as they affect the general public. This new edition follows the successful formula of its predecessor, it provides a comprehensive view of all types of additives, concentrating mainly on their technical aspects (chemistry/formulation, structure, function, main applications) with notes on the commercial background of each. The field has been expanded to include any substance that is added to a polymer to improve its use, so including reinforcing materials (such as glass fibre), carbon black and titanium dioxide. This is a book which has been planned for ease of use and the information is presented in a way which is appropriate to the users' needs.

This book is an update to the first edition compiled and published in 1990 by William Woishnis. A lot has changed in the field since 1990 and a lot has not changed. There are new plastic materials. There has been a huge turnover in ownership of plastics producing companies. There has been a lot of consolidation, which of course means discontinued products. Thus, this update is much more extensive than the usual "next edition." It has been reorganized from a chemistry point of view. Plastics of similar polymer types are grouped into nine chapters. Each of these chapters includes an introduction with a brief explanation of the chemistry of the polymers used in the plastics. An extensive first chapter has been added as an introduction that summarizes the chemistry of making polymers, the formulation of plastics, testing and test methods, and plastic selection. Most plastic products and parts are expected to be used in environments other than room temperature and standard humidity conditions. Chapters 2-10 are a databank that serves as an evaluation of plastics as they are exposed to varying operating conditions at different temperatures, humidity, and other factors. Over 900 graphs for more than 45 generic families of plastics are contained in these chapters. Chapter 11 contains extensive mechanical and electrical data in tabular form. The tables contain data on several thousand plastics. Similarly, Chapter 12 contains thermal data on several thousand plastics. Data from the first edition have only been removed if those products were discontinued, and many products were. Product names and manufacturers have been updated. • Detailed introductions of plastics properties, testing procedures, and principles of plastics design. • The only "databook" available on the effects of temperature and humidity conditions on plastics and elastomers. • More than 1,000 graphs and tables allow for easy comparison between products. • Covers more than 70 types of plastics, and summarizes the chemistry of each type.

Plastics and rubber materials, or polymers, are increasingly the first choice of engineers when reliable, cost-effective performance and safety are essential. The volume of polymers used in the Western economy now exceeds that of metals, which requires today's engineering students to have a thorough grounding in the properties and applications of polymeric materials. The first chapters of Engineering with Polymers explain what polymers are, how they behave, and how articles are made from them. The authors then show how the standard engineering techniques of stress analysis, structures, fluid mechanics, heat transfer and design can be adopted or adapted to cover plastics and rubber materials. The book ends with chapters detailing interactions between processing and properties, and a description of a variety of approaches to designing plastics products, from practical advice to the use or further development of theoretical principles, backed up by examples and case studies. The book is aimed at mechanical engineering students and design engineers in industry and also at materials' and chemical engineers.

The sixth edition of this classic reference work continues to provide a balanced and comprehensive overview of the nature, manufacture, structure, properties, processing and applications of commercially available plastics materials. Aiming to bridge the gap between theory and practice, it enables scientists to understand the commercial implications of their work as well as providing technologists with a theoretical background. Early chapters describe the history and nature of plastics and explain the relationship of chemical structure and properties. Preparation, structure, properties processing and applications of each class of plastics materials are then considered separately. New chapters have been added on materials selection and special polymers, including biodegradable and electroconductive polymers and thermoplastic elastomers. In addition many new plastics materials have been added throughout the text and more information has been included on testing methods and data. The sections on production/consumption statistics has also been completely updated. Reviews of previous editions: It's a genuine milestone in reference works...and the book is a 'must' for anyone concerned with the selection, preparation, compounding or processing of these materials' - British Plastic and Rubber 'This latest edition maintains the high standard set previously... The book s a 'must' for both student and practising technologists' - Plastics Materials 'The fourth edition of John Brydson's book carries on the splendid traditions of the previous three. As a reference book for a laboratory, sales office or student's bedroom, it is unrivalled in its comprehensive of the history, chemistry and technology of plastics'. - Reinforced Plastics 'As a reference book on the subject it is unique for its depth in such a compact form, yet allied to that it is so eminently readable. It is a working chemist's book for a working chemist.' - Journal of the Oil and Colour Chemists Association 'This is one of the most comprehensive reference books in its class.' - Polymer News, March 1996

The first edition of Radiation Technology for Polymers set the standard as a valuable, time-saving resource offering systematic fundamental information about industrial radiation technologies. Raising the bar even further, Radiation Technology for Polymers, Second Edition explores emerging applications of ultraviolet (UV) and electron beam (EB) radiation to polymer processing, detailing significant changes in the field since the first publication. Presents important new processing and engineering data from selected commercial products Since the publication of the previous edition, many technological developments have taken place, new applications and products have been developed and commercialized, and some already established ones have been discontinued. This book updates changes, trends, and general issues in radiation technology. It presents vital, cutting-edge information to aid further reduction of volatile organic compounds and toxic substances in the environment, develop alternative sources of energy, and harness energy in both medical and industrial applications. The author considers novel uses of UV/EB technology in: Equipment and instrumentation developments in automotive, electronics, and wood-processing industries Applications used in waterborne coatings and adhesives, film modifications, high-performance coatings, and inkjet technology Processing of coatings, paints, inks, and adhesives, as well as thermoplastics and elastomers in film, sheet, and other forms This reference discusses new uses for UV and EB irradiation, the response of polymers to irradiation, tests related to dosimetry and radiometry, and related safety and hygiene. It is also fortified with new problems and worked solutions, as well appendices with supplementary information on equipment manufacturers, raw materials suppliers, and principles of green chemistry and sustainability.

Enlarged and completely revised, Volume 1 of the third edition of 'Hummel' contains almost 2800 FT-IR spectra, largely of new polymers. All spectra are presented with information on source, preparation, structural and molecular formulas, decimal numbers and an extensive bibliography. From a review of the second edition: 'My first impression after scanning through the volumes was that this is an amazing reference work. Each volume has an extensive bibliography. The spectra are very well recorded, even for materials where sample preparation must have been very difficult. The decimal classification used in the Atlas is a brilliant and complete system for classifying polymers... (this Atlas) must be the best presented and most up-to-date reference available.' Polymer Division Newsletter D.O. Hummel, Professor of Physical Chemistry at the University of Cologne, FRG, has written several books in the field of polymers and plastics which have found international renown. Professor Hummel is one of 'the polymer gurus' for polymer scientists worldwide. This spectral library with all additional information is also available in electronic form by Chemical Concepts.
