Mark R. Woodward’s Islam in Java: Normative Piety and Mysticism in the Sultanate of Yogyakarta (1989) was one of the most important work on Indonesian Islam of the era. This new volume, Java, Indonesia, and Islam, builds on the earlier study, but also goes beyond it in important ways. Written on the basis of Woodward’s thirty years of research on Javanese Islam in a Yogyakarta (south-central Java) setting, the book presents a much-needed collection of essays concerning Javanese Islamic texts, ritual, sacred space, situated in Javanese and Indonesian political contexts. With a number of entirely new essays as well as significantly revised versions of essays this book is a valuable contribution to the academic community by an eminent anthropologist and key authority on Islamic religion and culture in Java.

Thomas Pötsch investigates the channel properties of cellular networks and analyzes the effects that cause inefficient performance of legacy congestion control protocols, such as TCP and its variants, on cellular networks. Inspired by the findings, a novel delay-based congestion control protocol called Verus is proposed and evaluated across a variety of network scenarios. Furthermore, the author develops a stochastic two-dimensional discrete-time Markov modeling approach that dramatically simplifies the understanding of delay-based congestion control protocols.

The first scientifically backed guide to a happy, fulfilling retirement. Over the years, Dr. Fritz Fraunfelder and Dr. Jim Gilbaugh have seen thousands of their patients respond differently to the challenges of retirement: some rose to new heights; others hit new lows. The doctors began to wonder: How do some people maintain their vitality, interests, and zest for life in retirement while others became distant, even depressed? Is there a magic formula for retiring well? To find the answer, they designed a comprehensive study involving more than one thousand patients. The results were surprising but clear. Financial planning is not as important to a fulfilling retirement as many may think-the psychological experience is just as crucial. The happiest retirees shared eight key traits; all of them were able to: * plan ahead * maintain a positive attitude * accept change * lean on their support network * have a sense of purpose * keep a healthy lifestyle * engage in leisure activities * enjoy some expression of spirituality Retire Right evaluates the reader and provides guidelines for how to develop each key characteristic. The good news? These essential skills can be strengthened, even acquired from scratch, whether the reader is just starting to plan for retirement, is in the early years, or is a seasoned retiree. The first scientifically backed bulletproof prescription, this book is the most concrete guide to a happy retirement.

Jack Prelutsky’s exploration of outer space is not for the faint of heart. No friendly little E.T.–type aliens await your arrival. There are many imaginative ways to perish in these darkly comedic cautionary verses about unexplored worlds so far beyond our solar system. The final poem is an environmental tour de force that packs a wallop. Here are poems the older reader will find great fun to memorize and rattle off to anyone who will listen! And there is a special bonus: anagrams for the kid who loves word puzzles. From the Hardcover edition.

The idea for re-organising the complex collection of interlocking European treaties in order to make them clearer was originally presented in the Comission's opinion to the 1997 Intergovernmental Conference at Amsterdam. It was taken up in the 'Wise Men' report by Jean-Luc Dehaene, former Prime Minister of belgium, Lord Simon, former Minister of Trade and Competitiveness in Europe, and Richard vonWeizacker, former President of the federal republic of Germany, on the institutional implications of enlargement. The European Comission then asked the European University Institute (EUI) in Florence to carry out a feasibility study on simplifying the Treaties without, however, changing their substance. The EUI has produced a draft basic Treaty of the European Union - a simplified, coherent treaty that restructures the Articles setting out the institutional framework, the operating rules of the Union and the EU's policy objectives. The contributors in this volume analyse the draft and comment on whether this re-organisation actually makes the Treaties more accessible to Europe's cotizens. In doing so, they pose another question; is simplification sufficient, or has the time come for a Basic treaty that really provides the EU with a proper constitution? In addressing this question, the authors- academics and politicians with an in-depth knowledge of the EU's constitutional development- make a valuable contribution to the wider debate on the future of Europe.
