In this memoir Sascha Feinstein recounts life with his father, Sam Feinstein, who was both a brilliant artist and a hoarder of monumental proportions. He collected only uncollectible objects—artifacts that required him to give them importance—and at the time of his death in 2003, his hoarding had literally destroyed all three of his large homes. Despite this, Sam Feinstein was a focused artist and art teacher. This strange double helix of creativity and destruction guides the various reflections in this memoir. Like his students’ canvases—paintings inspired by enormous still lifes constructed from the world’s refuse—this book incorporates a myriad of sources in order to create a more layered experience for the reader. The final result is the depiction of a painter with the highest artistic ideals who nevertheless left behind an incalculable amount of physical and emotional wreckage.

Clinging to the Wreckage is the first part of John Mortimer's acclaimed autobiography. Here he recounts his solitary childhood in the English countryside, with affectionate portraits of his remote parents - an increasingly unconventional barrister father, whose blindness must never be mentioned, battling earwigs in the mutinous garden, and a vague and endlessly patient mother. As a boy dreaming of a tap-dancing career on the stage and forming a one-boy communist cell at boarding school, his father pushes him to pursue the law, where Mortimer embarks on the career that was to inspire his hilarious and immortal literary creations. Told with great humour and touching honesty, this is a magnificent achievement by one of Britain's best-loved writers.

Having achieved considerable success with his first novel, River Thieves, Michael Crummey has written a book that is equally stunning and compelling. The Wreckage is a truly epic, yet twisted, romance that unfolds over decades and continents. It engages readers on the austere shores of Newfoundland’s fishing villages and drags them across to Japanese POW camps during some of the worst events of the Second World War. Haunting, lyrical, and deeply intimate, Crummey’s language fully exposes his characters’ vulnerabilities as they struggle to come to terms with their guilt and regret over decisions made during their impulsive youths. It is a testament to Crummey’s gifts as a novelist that he can flow quite easily through time, across landscapes, and between vastly different characters. He vividly captures the mental and physical anguish experienced in prison camps, and with calm lucidity explores the motives of a Japanese soldier whose actions seem inhumanly cold and calculating. Crummey toys with the readers’ sympathies, suggesting there are few distinctions between the enemy and us. He incorporates heartbreaking tragedy–the dropping of the atom bomb, lynchings in America, murderous revenge–to underscore the darker side of humanity. Crummey shows that we are capable of violence, but in the end he proves we are also capable of redemption, forgiveness, and can be led, unashamed, back to the ones we love.

Lillian Linden is a liar. On the surface, she looks like a brave survivor of a plane crash. But she's been lying to her family, her friends, and the whole world since rescue helicopters scooped her and her fellow survivor, Dave Hall, off a deserted island in the South Pacific. Missing for almost two years, the castaways are thrust into the spotlight after their rescue, becoming media darlings overnight. But they can't tell the real story—so they lie. The public is fascinated by the castaways' saga, but Lillian and Dave must return to their lives and their spouses. Genevieve Randall—a hard-nosed journalist and host of a news program—isn't buying it. She suspects Lillian's and Dave's explanations about the other crash survivors aren't true. And now, Genevieve's determined to get the real story, no matter how many lives it destroys. In this intriguing tale of survival, secrets, and redemption, two everyday people thrown together by tragedy must finally face the truth…even if it tears them apart.

What RAMBLINGS is all about .. Luck affects the lives of all of us. The abundance or lack of it depends to a great degree on the fortunes of birth. Browse through old copies of LIFE magazine or watch CNN for a while, and you may soon see that the overwhelming majority of our world's six billion inhabitants was born with so little luck that even that is all bad. The basic aspiration for those poor souls is just to get through today with something to eat and a dry place to sleep. A few of us - a very few - are born into fortunate circumstances, and such good luck early on usually, but not always, jump-starts a lifetime of more. Such later life good luck, I believe, is in direct proportion to ones ambitions and aspirations. Luck, I feel, is largely self-made. To win big means to risk big. Those who rarely lose never gamble. Aside from the great good luck of my birth and early up-bringing, I have been blessed with a curious and adventurous temperament (see later pages: "Been there" and "Done that"). There isn't a risk I've ever taken that I wouldn't go for again. (Well, a few I'd as soon forget.) But abundant luck for any of us comes in two flavors; Good and Bad. My down sides have included double pneumonia as a youngster, the character-building Great Depression, World War II that denied my generation the best and final years of our youth and thrust us into abrupt adulthood, a plane crash, a train wreck, major surgeries, nearly a year in hospitals, annoying disabilities I've had to learn to live with, the sudden and unexpected deaths of loved ones, near bankruptcy, killer hurricanes (one of which cost me most of my remaining health, another over a million dollars), and - just to cap things off - leukemia. But all the really rough times have been more than made up for by all the truly good ones. I was born at a wondrous time and in a great place to remarkable and loving parents both of whom were college graduates and the fulfillment of their own parents' Great American Dream. I was raised in a close and supportive family, its eldest son, and lived in a community with all available small town and big city advantages. I found and married the love of my life, beautiful Evelyn, who has given me more than I ever deserved and who's been at my side for almost a half -century. While we were still young (and foolish) enough to give up the mainland rodent race, we settled with our four children on a tropical island and survived and thrived for 33 halcyon years in "America's Paradise". She and I have experienced more and have traveled farther than all our contemporaries. We've accumulated enough memories to fill these pages several times over. I have a great circle of close friends who keep in regular contact and which once numbered about a hundred. Regretfully, it shrinks by two or three each passing year, and that sad trend will only continue and accelerate. A few of these old guys and dolls date back to my kindergarten days, but the blend includes with all the old, new ones, all shapes, sizes, ages, colors, and from all over. My wealth of friends have enriched my days. My occasional enemy has simply added spice to the mix. Life has been great: full of challenges and disappointments, opportunities and failings, adventures and tragedies, good luck and bad. All in all, my cup runneth over, and its broth hath fulfilled me.. Who could ask for anything more???
